Ogden family dog killed, $5,000 reward offered

Humane Society of Utah offers a reward for arrest and conviction in dog shooting case

The Humane Society of Utah (HSU) is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for shooting a female 5-year-old Husky named Maia Sunday, Oct. 28, in the area of Wildrose Way, Ogden, Utah. The HSU hopes the reward assists the Ogden Police Department in obtaining information required to identify and charge whoever is responsible for this alleged act of animal cruelty.

“We offer our sincerest condolences to Maia’s family,” said Gene Baierschmidt, HSU executive director. “We hope that the information needed is obtained to hold the person responsible for discharging a firearm within city limits and killing a companion animal. We need to know if this was an intentional act of aggravated animal cruelty.”

“A concerned citizen reported hearing what was believed [to] be a single gunshot before finding a wounded Husky breed dog,” according to a statement released from Ogden Police Oct. 29. “Attempts were made to transport the dog to a veterinary hospital for care, but the animal died before that could happen.”

Ogden police say detectives from the Major Crimes Unit are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call 801-395-8221 or email detectives@ogdencity.com.

Releasing more than 10,000 pheasants

What: Tomorrow, DWR personnel will release thousands of pheasants across Utah. This effort will supply birds for the 2018 pheasant hunt, which begins on Saturday, Nov. 3. Over the course of the month-long hunt, we’ll release more than 10,000 birds, but the majority will be released right before the hunt opens this weekend.

When: Birds will be released right before every weekend of the hunt — usually on Fridays — but please confirm timing with the area contact (see below). The hunt begins Saturday, Nov. 3.

Where: Areas across Utah (call one of the contacts below to arrange details)

Contacts: The release contacts vary, depending on where you go:

·         Northern Utah — Randy Wood, 801-388-2542

·         Northeastern Utah — Dax Mangus, 435-790-5320

·         Central Utah — Riley Peck, 435-979-0749

Catching striped bass at Lake Powell to serve as hatchery brood stock  (limited opportunity)

What: Lake Powell is known for its huge, hungry striped bass. (The state record striped bass was four feet long and caught at Lake Powell.) Next week, DWR biologists will attempt to catch 200 of these bass so they can be transported to the Springville fish hatchery and eventually used as brood stock. This would be the first-ever striped bass brood-stock population in a Utah hatchery. Before the bass are integrated into the hatchery system, they will face a thorough quarantine process. The biologists then plan to use the brood-stock striped bass — along with some white bass — to produce wipers, a sterile hybrid fish species. R

Building beaver dams in Miller Creek

What: At first glance, it may appear the wrong species is building dams in Miller Creek! Next week, DWR habitat crews will take on the beaver’s usual role, dropping in support poles, weaving in branches and packing mud on the structures they’re building. These structures, known as beaver dam analogues, mimic real beaver dams. They collect and deposit sediment, reconnect the floodplain, improve water quality and provide better habitat for the creek’s fish. Having more water in the area will also benefit the mammals and birds that use this corridor. Biologists hope that beavers will eventually move into the area and continue the effort.
