"I hope it means something to you all."

Youth Fountain is a two piece Emo / Pop Punk band based in Vancouver B.C. Canada featuring members Cody Muraro (Vocals) & Tyler Zanon (Guitar/Vocals). The band has been around since early 2013, starting out as a solo act/musical outlet created by founding member Zanon. After a few years of having potential song ideas and demos tracked, he recruited Muraro to guest on the debut song "Grinding Teeth." The chemistry worked out in a positive manor, so the two decided to undergo the project together moving forward.

Since the official release of the two track EP Grinding Teeth back in May 2017, both members have continued writing, recording & producing new music in anticipation of the release of their full length debut album along side playing a handful of shows across western CanadaThe band released their self-titled Pure Noise Records debut EP in July 2018 and hit the road the following fall, touring the full US and cross Canada in support of the record.

How Lack Of Access To Oral Health Care Hurts Working Class Communities

What if every time you saw your child’s smile it broke your heart?

For those in the financial bracket known as the “working poor,” it can be devastating to realize that a child’s teeth are coming in crooked, their bite is not aligned, or they have other significant oral needs that require an orthodontist they likely can’t afford.

Even if the parents scrape together enough money, imagine having to drive for an hour or more to reach an orthodontist because none serve your community.

That is the reality for many working class parents across the country. In fact, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) reports that nearly 63 million Americans live in areas that have a shortage of dental-health professionals.

Dr. Bobbi Peterson (www.allthingsdrbobbi.com), however, is among those who chose to set up practice in a working class neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York.

“I just felt like I was needed more here,” says Dr. Peterson, who is an orthodontist who grew up in a similar neighborhood. “I wanted to be able to make an impact in the lives of people who really needed it and also make an impact in the community.”

Dr. Peterson speaks to a variety of organizations and at schools about the importance of oral health.  Her office offers free evaluations to middle school students once a week and is involved in other community projects.  That is the kind of impact that communities with no dental health professionals don’t receive.

She says one of the most rewarding parts of her job has been that she gets to become a role model for young black women in the community.  Many of the girls she meets have never seen a black doctor, especially a black female doctor.

A lack of oral health care for children means more than going without a winning smile. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services some serious consequences include:

  • Social and self-esteem issues. Dental issues can have a negative influence on children's speech, growth, function, and social development. As the child grows into adulthood, poor appearance resulting from dental problems also can contribute to social isolation, lower wages, and loss of self-esteem.

  • Nutritional and performance problems. Missing teeth, pain, and infection from oral diseases can limit food choices and worsen nutrition. Pain caused by tooth decay also can result in missed days at school and work and diminished performance.

  • Other health concerns. Poor oral health is associated with increased bacterial systemic exposure and increased inflammatory factors that can lead to such problems as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory disease.

The goal of serving families in underserved areas is to help the patients, but it also has advantages for the dentist or orthodontist, Dr. Peterson says. Patients are more likely to stay with her over a longer period of time because they feel she is part of their community, and they are more likely to promote her to their friends and relatives because they develop more of a personal relationship with someone who is in their neighborhood.

“I think it’s important that more professionals set up in challenging neighborhoods,” Dr. Peterson says, “because that is where people really need them.”

About Dr. Bobbi Peterson

Dr. Bobbi Peterson (www.allthingsdrbobbi.com) is an orthodontist whose office, Aces Braces, is in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn, NY, where she offers child, adolescent, and adult orthodontic services. In addition to instructing new Dental Residents at Kings County Hospital, she volunteers in community schools to teach students and staff dental health and to provide free screenings to middle school students. Dr. Peterson’s training allows her to specialize in all aspects of orthodontics - including retainer installations, crooked or crowded teeth, gapped teeth, and crossbites. Dr. Peterson earned her dental degree from Howard University, and she completed a residency in orthodontics at Maimonides Med

Utah State Treasurer appoints director of new Land Trusts Protection and Advocacy Office

SALT LAKE CITY – March 7, 2019 – Utah State Treasurer David Damschen today announced the appointment of Justin Atwater as the director of the newly created Land Trusts Protection and Advocacy Office.

During the 2018 general session, the legislature authorized the creation of the office to advocate for Utah trust lands beneficiaries, oversee SITLA and SITFO administrations and help the public understand and support these endowments. The office is overseen by the state treasurer and a newly created Protection and Advocacy Committee.

“The depth and quality of Mr. Atwater’s background in law, government operations, real estate development and investment uniquely qualifies him to serve as the first director of the Advocacy Office,” Treasurer Damschen said. “Monitoring complex land and investment management decisions to ensure they benefit all current and future beneficiaries requires specialized expertise that we are fortunate to have found in Mr. Atwater.”

Atwater brings more than a decade of experience in real estate development, management, entitlement, leasing, law and investment. He recently served as executive director of the State Executive Branch Ethics Commission and as the chief operating officer and general counsel for a Utah-based real estate development firm. In a previous role, he assisted the developer of the largest ski terrain in North America in achieving several legal and real estate development results that shaped the future of the mountain recreation and development landscape in Utah.

“I am enthusiastic about developing an environment of cooperation and providing responsible, undivided advocacy for the preservation, stability and growth of trust lands assets for years to come,” Atwater said.

The Protection and Advocacy Committee was formed last fall.  The committee screened, selected and interviewed candidates during the past six months.  They recently presented Treasurer Damschen with their top two nominations.

“We are thrilled by Mr. Atwater’s appointment and are eager to work with him to advocate for and protect the interests of current and future trust beneficiaries,” Protection and Advocacy Board Chair Mel Brown said.

Atwater will assume his role on March 18.

About the School and Institutional Trust System

When Utah became a state in 1896, Congress granted approximately seven million acres of land into twelve separate trusts for the support of state institutions, the largest being a trust for the perpetual support of public schools. The land has been administered by the School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration (SITLA) since 1994. In 2014, the Utah State Legislature created SITFO as an independent state agency with a five-member Board of Trustees, chaired by the state treasurer, to invest the funds produced by SITLA’s administration of the land.
