With wildfires attacking areas in your state, the Humane Society of the United States’ Animal Rescue Team has developed a comprehensive disaster preparedness check list to help keep pets safe.

Our Animal Rescue team has established a disaster kit plan, to assist families with pets in the event of a weather related catastrophe. Families are encouraged to have one of these ready in their homes at all times, especially in light of recent events.

Some items that should be included:

  1. Food and water for at least five days for each pet. Also bring bowls and a manual can opener if you are packing canned pet food.
  2. Medications for at least five days and all medical records, including vaccination history. Keep these stored in a waterproof container. You may also consider storing them digitally on a flash drive or online.
  3. Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with tags for identification.  Microchipping your pet is ideal as collars can be easily removed.
  4. A pet first aid kit.
  5. Litter box with extra liter and a scoop.
  6. Sturdy leashes, harnesses, and carriers to transport pets safely.
  7. Current photos of you with your pets and descriptions of your animals.
  8. Comfort items that may include a pet bed or a special toy, if you can easily take them, to reduce stress.
  9. Written information about your pets feeding schedules, medical conditions and behavior issues along with the name and number of your veterinarian. This information can also be kept digitally as well.

Other useful items:

  • Newspapers
  • Paper towels
  • Plastic trash bags
  • Grooming items
  • Household bleach

Some helpful tips for yours and your furry family members safety:

  1. If it isn’t safe for you, it isn’t safe for your pet. Never assume that you will be allowed to bring your pet to an emergency shelter. Before a disaster hits, call your local office of emergency management to verify that there will be shelters in your area that take people and their pets. Have a list of hotels and motels that accept pets in a 100 mile radius of your home. Keeping in mind, that in a catastrophic event, local hotels will fill quickly and may not be available. Make arrangements with friends or relatives in advance to ensure that you and your pets are able to seek shelter in their home, if needed. If housing together is not an option, know the requirements of your kennel or veterinarian's office for pet boarding. And as a last resort, connect with your local animal shelter to determine if they will offer temporary boarding during the time of crisis. Keeping in mind that they may also be impacted by the disaster and not be available to house animals.

  2. Have a plan in place for when you are out of town or can’t get home to your pet when a disaster strikes. Find a trusted neighbor, friend or family member and give them a spare key. Ensure that they know your pets feeding and medication schedule, and if using a pet sitting service find out ahead of time if they will be able to help in the event of an emergency.

  3. Please leave out a bowl of water for our wildlife friends. They too are trying to take themselves and their families to safety.

Wildfires strike without warning and can leave families devastated. We hope that our suggested kit and tips above will give families in effected areas confidence that their pets are covered should disaster strike. August 9, 2018 - Los Angeles, CA - Emo Nite LA have outdone themselves once again with the announcement of their Emo Nite Day lineup. The party will feature performances from artists like Dashboard Confessional, All Time Low, Mayday Parade, 3OH!3 (Performing WANT in its entirety), Boyfriendz x Gothboiclique and Saphir along with DJ Sets from Mark Hoppus (full Blink-182 set), Captain Cuts, GNASH, Ham on Everything and more!!!

The second annual full-day festival will take place on October 13th at Shrine Expo Hall + Grounds. On the monumental anniversary and announcement, the Emo Nite founders share "Last year's Emo Nite Day was truly amazing and we're super excited to be doing it again, bigger than ever. We first met and became friends at a karaoke bar where we decided to sing a Dashboard Confessional song together, so it's very surreal now, 4 years later, to be organizing a festival co-headlined by the very band that brought us together." Tickets and limited edition bundles are available now at emoniteday.com.

Emo Nite LA, the event started by three friends (Babs Szabo, T.J. Petracca and Morgan Freed) at a small dive bar has grown into a full-blown phenomenon. They have been able to bring together some of the most incredible names in music who have become part of this Emo Nite "family", including Halsey, Sonny Moore (Skrillex) and From First to Last, The Used, Post Malone, Good Charlotte, All American Rejects, Demi Lovato, New Found Glory, and so many more. They have been able to throw regular events in dozens of markets across the country and have had spots on lineups at festivals like Life is Beautiful, Slam Dunk, BUKU and Vans Warped Tour. In addition to these events, the Emo Nite founders have created successful clothing collabs with companies like OBEY, Urban Outfitters, PLEASURES, Rose in Good Faith, Chinatown Market, OWSLA and more. But above all else, Emo Nite LA brings together people who share the love of emo rock music from the 90's, 2000's, and today, changing the idea of what a music event can be.

"We're so lucky to have such a strong and of supportive community of people that have grown with us over the last few years and continue to trust us to deliver meaningful and unique experiences with our events" continue the trio of founders.

====================

Most critical infrastructure has checks and balances in place, but as the public internet expands and more people become connected via even more mobile communications gadgets, including wearables, so too do the world’s security risks. “People make mistakes,” says Jon Crowcroft. “We’re going to need more care and much more attention to the security mechanisms.” Crowcroft believes that in recent years we’ve “gone in the opposite direction with less care being paid to these concerns.”

In his interview with CMRubinWorld founder C M Rubin, Crowcroft, the Marconi Professor of Communications Systems and Chair of the Programme Committee at the Alan Turing Institute – University of Cambridge, sheds light on how governments can improve the confidentiality in cloud computing, and discusses the future of computer and AI. Crowcroft, an advocate for the democratization of machine learning and AI, is hopeful that all “citizens become able to make use of the tools.”
