====================

Christmas is just 20 days away, and parents all over the country have been shopping and researching the best present to get their kids. While some of your readers’ shopping may be done already, there’s still time to grab those last-minute gifts or inspire ideas for those who aren't sure what to get.

The rest of the month is only going to go by faster, so we made a list of the most popular toy in each state to give parents and loved ones ideas for gifts. All the info you’ll need to cover this information is below.

The most popular toy in Utah is Lego Minecraft!

What: Reviews.org released their list of the most popular toy in each state this holiday season on December 3rd, 2018.

Where: The full report with information for each state can be found here: https://www.reviews.org/trends/states-favorite-christmas-toy/. You can find the digital assets of our map in our Google Drive here.

How: Our data team looked at the toys people are shopping for most according to Google Shopping data from the last three months. After compiling a list of toys, we then analyzed that data with Google Trends to determine the most popular toy in each state.

Highlights from the report:

  • Power Wheels and Lego Friends were the most popular toy in eight states each, making them the most popular toys overall.
  • The modern hula hoop has been around since 1958, and it’s still a favorite now. It was the most popular in seven states.
  • Speaking of old favorites, Furby and Mighty Beanz also made the most popular in some states.

    • Hair or no hair?

              What causes us to have hair on our arms and legs but none on the palms of our hands or the soles of our feet? Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine have discovered that a naturally-occurring inhibitor in hairless skin blocks a key signaling pathway which is responsible for hair growth. The scientists are hopeful that these results could be used as a starting point for developing targeted hair growth therapies in the future. (EDITORS: Additional information

    • Back and neck pain

              The breakdown of spinal discs is a big contributor to back and neck pain, which afflicts roughly half the U.S. adult population. Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania have successfully engineered and implanted lab-built discs in goats, a major step toward the ultimate goal of a new treatment for humans. By combining an animal’s own stem cells with biomaterial scaffolds, researchers were able to make a composite structure that they implanted into the spine as a replacement disc. • Leukemia drug

              The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first inhibitor drug specifically targeting patients with acute myeloid leukemia with a particular gene mutation that doesn’t respond well to chemotherapy. Hematologist-oncologist Alexander Perl of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania says the drug, gilteritinib, “brings a new, highly effective, and well-tolerated treatment option to the clinic for a group of truly high-risk patients.” (EDITORS: Additional information)

    • Climate-change opinions

              Experiencing extreme weather is not enough to convince climate change skeptics that humans are damaging the environment, according to research conducted at the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania. Political identity and exposure to partisan news influence whether people report experiencing certain extreme weather events, according to a new study “Enduring Extremes? Polar Vortex, Drought, and Climate Change Beliefs.” The research showed that even Americans who lived in areas where a variety of extreme events were recorded—floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, and droughts—were ultimately no more likely to share the same beliefs about climate change as scientists.
