Set in a dingy cottage in a remote part of Galway, The Beauty Queen of Leenane tells the darkly comic tale of Maureen Folan, a lonely woman in her early forties, and her aging and dependent mother, Mag. Constantly at her mother’s beck and call, Maureen takes revenge by feeding her lumpy Complan and hurling the occasional insult. Escape comes in the form of Pato Dooley, who is about to go to Boston. When Mag interferes once too often, Maureen decides the time has come to break free.
This multiple Tony Award Winning play is written by the same acclaimed author as In Bruges and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Martin McDonagh. One of his several Irish dark comedies, The Beauty Queen of Leenane is a brutally surprising and darkly comedic story that captures the monotonous life of mother and daughter in rural Galway.

Your family has the opportunity to see some amazing historic artifacts together right now at the Spencer Fox Eccles: Treasures of the Transcontinental Railroad Exhibition at the Utah State Capitol, and best of all, it's FREE. But act quickly, because it's only open until June 24th!
This exhibition brings together several one-of-a-kind historic artifacts to tell the story of connecting our great country via rail, starting with the 1862 Pacific Railway Act signed by Abraham Lincoln and ending with the golden railroad spike that connected the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads in Promontory, Utah.
What I love about bringing family to this exhibition is that it can inspire you to have big conversations.
Great Space
You probably don't visit the Utah State Capitol often. Take the opportunity to look at this beautiful building. What makes it feel special? Why was it built this way? Even very young children can observe and talk about what makes this building different from (or similar to) their house, the grocery store, or their church. You can also talk about the dim lighting for preserving the artifacts and draw some comparisons to how we take care of things that we value.
A Visionary Project
Once upon a time, connecting this entire continent by rail seemed inconceivable, and then impossible, and yet visionaries, investors, politicians, and workers made it happen. Can your kids think of other examples of big challenges? Going to the moon and preserving our planet's resources are a couple, but if you bring grandparents along to the exhibit, it's likely that they'll name other technologies that we take for granted that once seemed impossible.
Lincoln
It's wonderful just to see Abraham Lincoln's signature, to know that he set pen to the paper right in front of you. But there's so much more to think about, imagining that moment in time. Ask your kids what they know about Lincoln, and it's likely that they'll offer up the Civil War and freeing the slaves. This document was signed after the Civil War had begun. Indeed, it was the secession of many Southern states that helped propel the project, because folks from the North and the South had been arguing about the rail route (among other things) for years. By the time that golden spike was placed, the Union had been preserved, slaves had been freed, and Lincoln had been assassinated.
Coins & Wages
Of course it's cool to see these old coins, but they also represent wages paid to the workers who built the railways. Along with much smaller numbers of local Mormons and Civil War veterans, about 15,000 Chinese immigrants and 10,000 Irish immigrants performed the backbreaking labor to create these railroads. Ask your kids to imagine the lives of these new immigrants, arriving in a foreign land, some learning a new language, working out in the wilderness. Does it sound like a thrilling adventure, frightening and lonesome, or all of the above?
The Governor's Office
While you're visiting the Capitol Building, be sure to stop by the governor's office! It's a great chance to learn some civics and in real time, but even better, they'll be handing out special goodie bags for kids, filled with cool treats like a special commemorative Spike 150 penny.
Don't miss the chance to see these treasures of history and talk about it with your kids. My suggestion: Continue your discussion over a packed picnic at Memory Grove Park. You don't have to spend any money to create some precious family memories together. For more information, visit their website.
