Open Letter from Mayor:
The holiday season begins
November begins the holiday season; it is a time of the year where hearts are turned to helping and serving others. It is a time to express gratitude for the many blessings that come into our lives daily. Thanksgiving began many years ago, when the pilgrims set aside a day to express thanks and shared their food with the natives of the land, who had helped them in times of misery. That tradition of sharing and expressing thanks continues even today, it is one day that is truly American. It would be difficult to imagine a society devoid of benevolence and humility. Even though it is a designated holiday each year, gratitude should be expressed continually as the heart will allow. George Washington said, “It is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly implore His protection and favor.”
It doesn’t take much reflection to realize how blessed we are to live in this country, this state, and this City. The freedom we enjoy, established by our forefathers, is priceless. I have visited many nations that do not have freedom who are under duress continually and I recognized quickly what a wonderful gift we have. We live in a nation of peace and plenty where American ingenuity provides us the comforts of life we all enjoy. We live in a beautiful city, surrounded by majestic mountains, and wonderful friends and neighbors. All of these blessings should be acknowledged in the way we live and serve others.
Ralph Waldo Emerson summed it up when he said we should be grateful “For each new morning with its light, for rest and shelter of the night, for health and food, for love and friends, for everything Thy goodness sends.”
I hope that each of you have an enjoyable Thanksgiving as you gather your families and friends together. Take time to enjoy a great meal and express gratitude for the bounties of life and the comforts you enjoy.
Happy Thanksgiving!
-Brent Chugg, Mayor
