Cory Green Pledges to Support Term Limits on Congress
Salt Lake City, UT – U.S. Term Limits (USTL) praises Cory Green, 2020 candidate for Utah's congressional district 1 for being the first person in the race to sign the term limits pledge. The seat is being vacated by U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop, who is not seeking reelection.
Currently, U.S. Term Limits has the support of nearly 70 pledge signers in Congress. USTL President Philip Blumel commented on Green's pledge saying, “Cory's support of term limits shows that there are individuals who are willing to put self-interest aside to follow the will of the people. America needs a Congress that will be served by citizen legislators, not career politicians.”
Green says, “As a constitutional conservative, I have personally seen the damage done to our country and to individual states in our union by politicians at the state and federal levels staying in office for absurdly long periods of time." He added, "A prime example is Utah's former U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch, who stayed in the senate for 42 years, which is uncalled for. Therefore, I support term limits and have signed the U.S. Term Limits pledge.”
The pledge to add an amendment to the Constitution is provided to every announced candidate for federal office. It reads, “I pledge that as a member of Congress, I will cosponsor and vote for the U.S. Term Limits amendment of three (3) House terms and two (2) Senate terms and no longer limit.” The U.S. Term Limits amendment has been introduced in both the U.S. Senate by Senator Ted Cruz (SJR1) and the U.S. House by Representative Francis Rooney (HJR20).
Blumel noted, “We have seen a dramatic increase in supporters wanting term limits on Congress. More than 82% of Americans have rejected the career politician model and want to replace it with citizen leadership. The way to achieve that goal is through congressional term limits.”
According to a 2018 nationwide poll on term limits conducted by McLaughlin & Associates, term limits enjoy wide bipartisan support. McLaughlin’s analysis states, “Support for term limits is broad and strong across all political, geographic and demographic groups. An overwhelming 82% of voters approve of a constitutional amendment that will place term limits on members of Congress.”
Blumel concluded, “America is in trouble. Our career politicians have let the people down. It is time to return control of our nation to the people. It is time for a constitutional amendment limiting congressional terms.”
The term limits amendment resolutions would require a two-thirds majority in the House and Senate, and ratification by 38 states, in order to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
Congressional term limits is the one bipartisan issue supported by both President Trump and former President Obama.

United Way of Salt Lake Named as a Model Design and Initiation Grantee for its Work in Transforming Education in Utah
Only fourteen organizations across the country were awarded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation grant
SALT LAKE CITY — United Way of Salt Lake (UWSL) has been named to the first cohort of Model Design and Initiation grantees by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Model Design and Initiation (MDI) grants were awarded to only fourteen organizations across the country. These organizations are seeking to build their capacity to lead networks that identify and solve common problems in schools using approaches that best fit their needs, learning what works and refining their approaches as they go.
For more than a decade, UWSL has been building partnerships dedicated to transforming the systems that keep children and families from achieving their potential. Through the Promise Partnership, UWSL convenes diverse, cross-sector networks of people to increase the number of low-income students and students of color who enter kindergarten ready to learn, thrive academically, earn high school diplomas, and enroll in and complete post-secondary degrees.
Through the MDI grant, UWSL will work closely with the Gates Foundation and other cohort members in order to strengthen its internal capacity to ensure success at creating equitable outcomes for children in the region. UWSL will focus specifically on strengthening its ability to help its partnerships design and carry out improvement projects.
“We know that improving outcomes for students, especially those living in poverty, requires all of us to work together differently,” said Bill Crim, President and CEO of United Way of Salt Lake. “The MDI grant will allow us to continue building the broadest and strongest team possible and to transform the educational environment for Utah kids. Through the Promise Partnership, systems are changing and outcomes are improving, and we know it is possible to create a more equitable world in which every child has the opportunity to succeed."
United Way of Salt Lake currently works within six school districts, nine communities and five state systems. Hundreds of businesses, educational and community partners and thousands of volunteers are engaged in this transformational work.

DENVER—The Center for Western Priorities today called on Congress and national leaders to take urgent and bold steps to preserve America’s parks and public lands for the coming decades. The call to action comes in a new report, Funding America’s Public Lands Future, that proposes the creation of a Conservation Trust Fund that would address perennial funding shortfalls and ensure consistent funding for future generations.
The report found that inadequate funding for the Interior Department and Department of Agriculture has created a collective maintenance backlog of nearly $20 billion across four land management agencies, at a time when America’s parks and public lands are under ever-increasing pressure from rising visitation, encroaching development, and a changing climate.
“Across the political spectrum, Americans agree that our parks and public lands are the greatest gift we can give to our children and grandchildren,” said Jennifer Rokala, executive director of the Center for Western Priorities. “We hope this report serves to kickstart a conversation about how we can stop the cycle of under-funding America’s lands and ensure they are cared for not just for the next few years, but in the decades to come.”
The report identifies six diverse funding streams that could be used to ensure the Conservation Trust Fund is not reliant on any one source of revenue, and is not wholly subject to the uncertainty of annual appropriations fights in Congress. Those potential funding streams range from royalties on conventional and renewable energy production to outdoor recreation to marijuana legalization or sports betting.
Key findings of the report include:
In recent decades, the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, and U.S. Forest Service have all received a smaller share of the federal budget, but face increasing challenges, including climate change, development, and increasing visitation.
Congress has permanently authorized the Land and Water Conservation Fund, a critical program that helps conserve public lands and enhance recreation opportunities, but has yet to ensure full, dedicated funding going forward.
Inadequate funding has left those four land management agencies with a collective maintenance backlog of $19.38 billion.
To ensure funding to manage our public lands and conserve our natural heritage, policymakers should consider establishing a Conservation Trust Fund with diverse funding streams that could augment general fund appropriations. Funding options include:
Oil and gas: Increase rent and royalty rates for drilling on public lands to match leading states
Coal: Close loopholes that allow companies to skirt royalty payments and update royalty rates
Renewable energy: Establish a framework for wind and solar leases on public lands, including a royalty on power generation
Hardrock mining: Update the Mining Law of 1872 by instituting a system of bids, rental rates, and royalties for the extraction of publicly-owned minerals
Outdoor recreation: Similar to existing taxes on hunting and fishing gear, institute a small tax on outdoor recreation equipment
Other: Use a portion of revenue from efforts to legalize sports gambling and legal marijuana sales for conservation

BBB Tip: Plan ahead, save on Black Friday shopping
11/7/2019 - Salt Lake City, UT — Black Friday is the single busiest shopping day of the year. While the sales used to start the day after Thanksgiving, they now start early in November. Deals are already happening, and Better Business Bureau Serving Northern Nevada and Utah provides tips on helping you get the best prices this season.
According to the National Retail Federation, in 2018 consumers spent an average of $313.29 on gifts and other holiday items over the five-day period between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday. The most popular items are apparel, toys, books, and video games.
Comparison shop to make the most of Black Friday and Holiday deals. With all the sales, it’s easy to assume you’re getting a good deal. But some deals are better than others. Make sure by comparison shopping that the price and quality of the product represent the best value.
Sign-up for email alerts. Many stores release their best Black Friday deals and exclusive coupons to people who have subscribed to their emails. Sign up ahead of the holiday season but be cautious of what information you have to provide in order to receive such alerts.
Read the fine print. Some retailers may offer an additional percentage off your purchase, but could exclude certain deals or items such as “doorbusters.” Also, be cautious of companies that boast a high percentage off, the item may be “75% off” but the original price could be inflated. In addition, online shopping deals may not include shipping costs. Comparison shop to make sure the deal is really a savings.
Compare Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. The Monday after Thanksgiving is considered the online version of Black Friday. Cyber Monday deals can often be just as good if not better than Black Friday deals. Include online deals in your comparison searches, but be sure to calculate any shipping fees into your bottom line.
Plan your in-store approach. In many cases, you no longer have to wait to see what deals will be offered on Black Friday. Retailers now release their Black Friday flyers weeks ahead of time so consumers can plan out their shopping spree. Make a map of the stores you plan to visit and what items are at which store. Some retailers only honor sale ads during a certain time frame, or on certain days, and could limit the amount of deeply discounted items you purchase. Sometimes you can only purchase online or in-store, so read carefully.
Do your research. Read product reviews on extremely discounted items. It could be a cheaper model or brand advertised, and not what you initially think you’re getting. As you are looking through the sales flyers and ads, check BBB.org for Business Profiles of the stores you want to visit, and read what other customers’ have experienced. Unfortunately, counterfeiters offer cheap prices, but not the product you thought you were getting.
Protect against overspending. Determine how much you can afford to spend and stick to it! Internet searches to determine which store has the best price can help you save money and not overspend.
Know the return policy and warranty information. Be sure to pass along any information about returns, exchanges, repairs, and warranties to the person who will use the item. Gift receipts are an easy way for recipients to return or exchange a gift if it’s not just right, but make sure the item is able to be returned before purchasing.
Use a Credit Card to purchase. Credit cards give you protection should you fall for a scheme or scam. You can dispute the charge if the product is not received in a prompt manner.
