PRESS RELEASE: San Juan County Issues Statement Regarding Grayeyes Residency Challenge
San Juan County, UT – Recently there have been numerous incorrect statements made regarding San Juan County Clerk John David Nielson and his handling of the residency challenge regarding Willie Grayeyes. On March 20, 2018, for the first time in his three year tenure as County Clerk, Mr. Nielson was contacted by a citizen making a residency challenge. Within 48 hours, Mr. Nielson asked for the challenge in writing, sought the advice of the Lt. Governor’s office about which Utah statutes governed the challenge, followed the previous Clerk’s practice of contacting the Sheriff’s office to assign an investigator to the matter, and decided to proceed under Utah’s voter challenge statute.
Mr. Nielson then discovered that, under the state statute in effect at the time, the challenger needed to fill out a form and the Clerk had discretion to provide them with a form. He contacted the citizen and asked her if she wanted to fill out the form, which she did on or around April 16, 2018. However, she dated the form March 20, 2018. Mr. Nielson, believing the document was simply formalizing the previous challenge of the same date, also dated the document with that date. While Mr. Nielson and the County recognize that this was a serious lapse in judgment, it had no impact on the outcome of the residency challenge. Mr. Nielson decided the challenge based on the evidence before him, including the challenger’s statement, the Sheriff’s Deputy’s investigation, and evidence from Mr. Grayeyes, and based on his understanding of what the state statutes required, not based on the date of the form or Mr. Grayeyes’ race, ethnicity, or political opinions. On a personal note, all of Mr. Nielson’s children identify as Navajo and it has pained him to witness firsthand the discrimination that they have faced. Mr. Nielson and the County have always been committed to professionally administering to the duties of their offices and remain committed to ethically discharging those duties in the future.

DENVER (August 13, 2018) — On Tuesday, August 14, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will host a national Smart Sectors roundtable discussion with the Utah Department of Environmental Quality and leaders from Utah’s mining industry in Midway, Utah.
“Utah’s mining industry plays a critical role in developing our natural resources and securing clean air, land and water,” said EPA Regional Administrator Doug Benevento. “These EPA Smart Sectors discussions will help us work together and develop new approaches to environmental challenges.”

EPA will also be seeking information about best practices in various industries and looking for opportunities to recognize companies that are going beyond compliance. Sectors identified for initial efforts in EPA Region 8 include: Agriculture and Food/Beverage Production; Mining and Oil and Gas; and Outdoor Recreation/Tourism. Additional sectors may be added over time.

The onePULSE Foundation is a nonprofit started by the owners of the Pulse Nightclub as a way of honoring those affected by the tragedy that took place in 2016, as well as to support construction and maintenance of the memorial, community grants to care for the survivors and victims' families, an educational program to promote amity among all segments of society, endowed scholarships for each of the 49 angels, and ultimately a museum showcasing historic artifacts and stories from the event.
