Join us May 15 as California's gubernatorial candidates share their positions on issues affecting the Golden State's kids.

Dear friends of FMC,

More than nine million children live in California. That’s more than the total population of all but 10 states. But when election time comes around in the Golden State, scant time or energy is spent considering the important issues that will impact the health and well-being of California’s children.

That’s the reason why next Tuesday’s gubernatorial forum is so exciting.

This year, a crowded field of contenders is vying to replace Jerry Brown as California’s governor. It’s a position that holds so much importance for the nearly 60,000 children living in out-of-home foster care and the more than 13,000 probation youth placed in institutions. Every dollar that supports them passes through the governor’s desk, approved in the budget or signed into law.

Yet candidates have been asked a precious few questions about their policies, plans and goals for these young people on the campaign trail.

Just in time for the June 5 primary, we are hosting several top candidates—including Antonio Villaraigosa, Delaine Eastin and John Chiang—to hear more about their positions on education, child welfare, children’s health, juvenile justice and child poverty, among other issues.

This is all part of our mission to drive public discourse around a population of young people who often struggle to have their voices heard in the political process.

Titled “Building our Future: A Forum on Children with California's Gubernatorial Candidates,” the nonpartisan community event will be held at Los Angeles Trade Technical College. The event is free and open to the public.

To put on the event, we partnered with the Children’s Defense Fund-California and The Children’s Partnership, two nonprofit organizations that have long advocated for the health and well-being of vulnerable children.

We also owe a great debt of thanks to sponsors like the Pritzker Foster Care Initiative, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Los Angeles Trade–Technical College, California Children's Academy, the Alliance for a Better Community, as well as our event partners which include Southern California Grantmakers, Breaking Barriers, California Pan-Ethnic Health Network, GRACE and Liberty Hill Foundation.

We hope to see you there. Please check out the event registration page for more details about the event and to RSVP. And if you want to know more about where the candidates stand on the issues, you can check out their answers to a set of pre-forum questions posted at The Chronicle of Social Change.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Loudenback
