What's the worst that could happen? What are the odds that it will?
A few years ago, I was walking into my local grocery store with my kids when I was stopped by a local reporter. Would we answer a few questions on camera about bounce houses? Sure, I replied, never one to shun a TV spotllight while wearing my KidsOutAndAbout jacket. She told me of a recent incident in which a high wind had lifted up a bounce house at a festival and carried some kids in it about 15 feet, bumping and bruising them along the way. "So... " she said, thrusting the microphone in my direction. "Are you still going to let your kids play in bounce houses, given the risk they pose?"
"Well.... sure," I replied. "The girls like them a lot, and it seems to me that the risk of them getting really hurt in one is so tiny as to be worth it. Besides, the risk isn't death, it's a bruise. So, no, I don't think this story is going to change what we do."
I guess boring common sense wasn't what they were looking for. I didn't make the news.
I remember my own childhood pretty vividly: I broke bones, I got bruised and scraped, I chipped a tooth, and my feelings were hurt time and again by mean girls. Learning to manage the small stuff made me able to manage the bigger stuff when I was an adult. So I knew that would happen to our kids, too. But our culture these days seems to be dedicated to preventing these challenges from presenting themselves in the first place.
I worry about what this means in the big picture. I worry that our hyper-focus on safety is leading to less risk-taking for young people, leading to a sedentary lifestyle where kids are safely protected from the outside world for now, but setting themselves up for problems with heart disease in the future. I worry, too, about what it means for innovation and entrepreneurship: Will people who value safety above everything else generate as many new ideas, start as many businesses? I worry about communicating a culture of fear of the outside world rather than confidence, and what it means for kids becoming happy and independent.
Instead of worrying about what's the worst that could happen, how about this: Ask yourself, too: What's the BEST that could happen? What are the risks associated if I try? If they're minimal, or if they're not devastating, and if the potential reward is great, I think our attitude should be, unequivocally, GO FOR IT.
