"A veil of snowflakes has formed between us. It seems as though they just materialized out of the air. They are so small we can’t see their shapes as they shimmer there, but I know their six points, those crystals that come down from heaven and look like stars."

Join us in our mission to publish new voices for the land before 10 a.m. (MST)

As an independent, not-for-profit publishing company, Torrey House Press brings you stories you won’t find anywhere else, from voices you wouldn’t hear otherwise. We publish the books that bigger, for-profit publishers on the East Coast won’t take a chance on, because we know that telling stories about our natural world is a powerful and necessary way to protect it. Join us in bringing these stories to the page.

Writers like Wallace Stenger, Ed Abbey, Terry Tempest Williams, and Ellen Meloy have informed many Torrey House authors. Our authors are pushing and expanding upon their conversations while creating the next wave of environmental writing, land ethic, and climate activism. Pictured is Ayja Bounous, author of Shaped by Snow: Defending the Future of Winter reading the work of Ellen Meloy.

Our authors go through a rigorous process of editing — polishing everything from big ideas to verb choices to punctuation. Designers conceptualize the visual presentation of the story, including cover imagery, colors, and typefaces. These design choices culminate in the printing of unofficial “galleys,” which are mailed to booksellers, reviewers, and media like radio programs, magazines, and newspapers. The proofreader looks over the galley for any last errors, and final corrections and design changes go to the designers. Pictured is Zak Podmore with galleys of his forthcoming book Confluence: Navigating the Personal and Political on Rivers of the New West

Check out our donor rewards — by donating $500 or more, you have the opportunity to meet both Ayja and Zak, two debut writers of the West.

  • Utah students to be honored at The Stock Market Game™ Awards Banquet on May 10

State Treasurer David Damschen to recognize 37 Utah students and teachers for winning statewide financial education competition

SALT LAKE CITY – May 9, 2019 – Students, teachers, government officials and local business leaders will celebrate the 37 winning students and teachers of The Stock Market Game™ spring 2019 statewide competition during an awards banquet on May 10. The banquet, hosted by Utah State Treasurer David Damschen, will feature student speeches, information about the competition and opportunities to learn more about financial responsibility.

Lincoln Elementary student Bergin Reilly’s team placed first in the elementary school division with a total final value of $168,294.74, over $38K more than the next highest ranking team in any division.  Reilly said, “The game taught us to be patient and talk about what to buy and the reasons we believed the stock could help. When we talked to each other, we had to make important decisions using the problem-solving strategy.”

The Stock Market Game exposes youth to the stock market and gives teachers an opportunity to teach students important investing principles, such as diversification, portfolio construction, compounding growth and risk management. Utah County Academy of Science student Ashley Black said, “I am fortunate to have several family members who enjoy investing, and I learn so much by watching their choices and tactics. However, I know that many of my peers didn’t have any experience with the stock market when the game began, which is why I think this simulation is so valuable.”

The Stock Market Game is an exciting curriculum complement to many subjects, including personal finance, math, social studies, economics, business education, college and career awareness, computer tech and marketing.  The second place team in the middle school division played the game as a component of their digital literacy class. “We used this game as a tool to increase our understanding of using Google Sheets, as well as improving our digital literacy and communication skills,” Vista Heights Middle School student Jillian Smith said.

Last fall, the Utah Office of State Treasurer assumed the responsibility of administering the game and the complementary InvestWrite competition, a writing contest that builds off of concepts learned through the Stock Market Game. Treasurer Damschen recently recognized the Utah winners of the Fall 2018 InvestWrite competition at their schools during assemblies and pizza parties.

“The Stock Market Game and InvestWrite competitions pique student interest in important concepts taught in the classroom by adding an element of competition,” Treasurer Damschen said.  “I appreciate the incredible efforts of teachers and students to improve financial knowledge, and I look forward to the opportunity to celebrate their success.”

The awards banquet will be held at noon in the Wasatch Room on the 10th floor of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. Registration check-in will be at 11:30 a.m., and the ceremony will begin at 12:35 p.m. This event is open to the media.  Due to capacity limitations, other guests may attend by invitation only.

  • Congress is planning to destroy women’s rights with a vote next week.

But Mother’s Day is this Sunday, and in honor of our mothers and everything they fought for, we are holding a Tweetfest TOMORROW at 10am ET to fight back!

We are urging congressmen to stand up for women, parents and children and vote “NO” on the Equality Act (H.R. 5).

The liberal left is determined to strip away legal protections for women and girls—this is not equality!

Equality was when women fought for the right to vote. Equality was when women broke down educational barriers. Equality was when women fought for the opportunity to compete in collegiate sports.

The Equality Act seeks to undo 100 years of progress for women.

Letting biological males compete in women’s sports is not equality. Giving biological males college scholarships meant for women is not equality. Teaching four-year olds in our public schools that they can choose to be a boy or a girl is not equality.

You can follow and retweet us @Heritage_Action, where we will be tweeting with the hashtags #MomsKnowBest and #EqualityAct.

    • #MomsKnowBest when it comes to teaching their children about gender. The #EqualityAct strips parents of their right to parent their own children.
    • The #EqualityAct allows biological men to participate in women’s sport. #MomsKnowBest when they want their daughters to succeed in sports and educational attainment.
    • #MomsKnowBest when they want they say a biological male shouldn’t be in the girls’ locker room. If passed, the #EqualityAct would violate the privacy of young girls and women.

Tomorrow, we will email you graphics and sample tweets you can use! In the meantime, see our “Equality” Act toolkit for the facts and talking points.

    See you on Twitter tomorrow!

WASHINGTON – Rep. Rob Bishop (UT-01) was informed by the United States Air Force of the relocation of the 86th Fighter Weapons Squadron from Eglin Air Force Base in Florida to Utah’s Hill Air Force Base (HAFB).

According to the Air Force, The decision increases the base population at Hill Air Force Base by 55 personnel (adds 42 military, eight civilian, and 16 contractor personnel.) Following the news, Rep. Bishop released this statement:

“This announcement reemphasizes the strategic importance of Utah’s Hill Air Force Base and the Utah Test and Training Range. For decades, Utah’s active duty, civilian, and contractor workforce has demonstrated its ability to perform at the highest levels. This addition will strengthen and further solidify that excellence. Utah plays a crucial role in the strategic strength of our nation. It is heartening to know the Air Force shares this confidence.”
