You did it! You brought us to our all-or-nothing goal of $25,000 to fund the publication of books by emerging writers Ayja Bounous and Zak Podmore. Thank you from all of us at Torrey House Press. This was an incredible community effort, and we’re grateful to everyone who donated and helped spread the word: readers, writers, outdoor enthusiasts, bookseller friends, nonprofit partners, and our board of directors.

The work of our nonprofit press would not be possible without you. Each book we edit, design, print, and distribute, and each author event we plan and publicize is powered by you—the Torrey House Press community. Together, we're moving the climate crisis conversation forward, inspiring action on behalf of the landscapes we love.

Thank you for joining us to publish these new voices for the land. We can’t wait to share Zak Podmore’s Confluence and Ayja Bounous’ Shaped by Snow with you.

For wild words and wild places

  • Food Allergies Versus Intolerance - Different Conditions with Different Treatments
  • DENVER —Sensitivity or intolerance to foods such as shellfish and milk are common and can cause significant cause for concern, but there is a difference between those symptoms and a true food allergy. Nearly 20 percent of adults report suffering from food allergies, but recent studies show only half that many actually have a food allergy. Some of that difference likely can be attributed to people having an intolerance and mistaking it for a food allergy.
  • A food allergy is an immune system reaction that affects more than one organ in the body, whereas, food intolerance is usually limited to digestive issues. Food intolerance disorders are a subset of all adverse food reactions and are reported by 15 to 20 percent of the population. Intolerances are even more common among patients with irritable bowel syndrome and other functional gastrointestinal disorders.
  • Some of the most common symptoms of a food allergy include: hives, itchy and watery eyes, shortness of breath and chest tightness. In the most severe cases, a food allergy can result in anaphylaxis. In contrast, an intolerance to a food affects the digestive system and occurs when a person is unable to break down food. Some symptoms of a food intolerance include: nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and cramps.
  • “Because of the life-threatening nature of anaphylaxis, it is important to see an allergy specialist if you are unsure if you have a food allergy or an intolerance,” said Kanao Otsu, MD, allergist and immunologist at National Jewish Health. “A specialist will take into account your history with that food and test results to properly diagnose the condition.”
  • An allergy skin test is used to check immediate sensitivity to select foods. Blood testing will measure the presence of IgE antibodies to specific foods. If it is suspected that you may not be allergic to a particular food, a food challenge may be performed to be certain.
  • Food allergies and food intolerance have different causes, requiring different treatments. For gastrointestinal sensitivity due to intolerance, carry an oral antihistamine to alleviate discomfort.
  • For those with food allergies, avoidance is key. If you have a food allergy, Dr. Otsu recommends the following steps to stay safe:
  • Always carry your epinephrine auto injector
  • Read labels carefully
  • Talk with restaurants and hosts about ingredients in dishes being served
  • Have a food allergy action plan
  • Use and understand allergy medications

  • As we launch National Charter Schools Week 2019, the nation and indeed the globe is filled with thousands of amazing innovations in teaching and learning that are transforming the way our students learn and the way adults work in and around the business of schooling.

While there are many reasons for the increasingly robust changes to public education, none has been more instrumental than the charter school movement.

Since 1991, chartering has introduced US education to the benefits of freedom, flexibility, opportunity, and innovation.

The first performance-based standards were born in charters, as was blended learning. Montessori and experiential learning approaches made a come back because of charters. Diverse sizes, set-up, programs and educator autonomy are infused throughout.

Thousands and thousands of reports and documents have been published about this simple concept. The data is clear and compelling that charter schools provide us with a tool to break free of conventional and often outdated thinking.

This week we join the 10 million parents and caregivers, the more than 3 million students, thousands of teachers, teams, supporters and policymakers that have joined forces in this bold and impactful effort.

Always remember that no matter what the challenges, putting our youth in front of all, is the right thing to do to ensure their success.

Please join us in celebrating National Charter Schools Week  and check out this easy and handy page of data and information to help you help others build more great learning opportunities for students everywhere.

Spanish Love Songs is a five-piece punk band based in Los Angeles, CA. They formed in 2014 after the demise of a previous band and a chance Craigslist post about lonely people looking to go to punk shows. Their sound combines the energy of drunken bar shows with the immediacy of intimate, lived-in lyrics.

Over the past five years, the band has released two albums full of songs told over fast drums and rousing power cords covering themes including apathy, anxiety, a slowly disintegrating marriage, and finding a positive way to handle the loss of those closest to you, while inching towards self-acceptance in a world that doesn't always feel like home. Since the release of their record last March, the band has hit the road nonstop, with no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
