5 Tips For Parents To Help Their Kids
Get Started With Retirement Planning
It’s a whole new world for recent college graduates entering the workforce. Their priorities have changed; now bills, rent, and student loans lead their monthly list.
Retirement planning ranks low as a priority for many young people in the early stages of their careers. About two-thirds of Millennials have nothing saved for retirement, according to a report by the National Institute on Retirement Security, and financial specialists say waiting to save could end up significantly delaying their retirement.
This is when parents can step in and advise their young adult kids on how and why to start a retirement plan now – before too many years roll by.
“Many people early in their work life figure retirement isn’t worth thinking about because it’s so far down the road, and they’ve got other obligations,” says Mark Henry, an estate planner, investment advisor and founder/CEO of Alloy Wealth Management (www.alloywealth.com). “But getting a late start is a big mistake. First of all, they’re missing out on valuable years of compounding returns.
“Mom and dad are near or in retirement now and know the importance of saving as much as you can as soon as you can, especially in today’s world. They can be huge assets of knowledge and wisdom for their grown children right now.”
Henry offers five tips that parents can pass on to their young-adult children to help them start planning for retirement:
“Parents today know the younger you are when you begin retirement investing, the more money you can have when it’s time to retire,” Henry says. “They need to emphasize that to their kids, and they can teach them by starting with simple concepts and building on them over time.”

Airplanes generate a massive amount of data. By 2026, annual data generation within the airline industry is expected to reach 98 million terabytes, according to a study conducted by Oliver Wyman.
Yet, airlines can't adequately process or store all of their data securely – a major industry problem that traditional data storage services are incapable of solving.
We're exploring how the new era of decentralized cloud storage services (think Sia, 0chain, Storj) can solve the data crisis within the airline industry through the use of blockchain technology, open-source software and unlimited scalability.

Five Western States Honored in National Transportation Competition
RAPID CITY, S.D. – Outstanding state department of transportation projects that tested innovative ways to improve driver safety on winter roads and brought economic growth to communities are among the top winners in the western regional America’s Transportation Awards competition. Thirteen western states nominated 27 projects this year, with nine of those projects receiving top honors today.
“State DOTs are committed to making America safer, better and stronger by improving connections between communities both large and small, urban and rural,” said John Schroer, president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Transportation. “The transportation projects in this competition are part of a national multimodal network that is moving millions of people and tons of goods where they need to go every day.”
Sponsored by AASHTO, Socrata, AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the 11th annual America’s Transportation Awards competition recognizes transportation projects in three categories: Quality of Life/Community Development, Best Use of Technology and Innovation, and Operations Excellence.
Four state DOTs took home awards in the Quality of Life/Community Development category. Utah DOT won in the small category (projects costing under $25 million) for its Cottonwood Canyons Public-Private Partnership/Fiber Deployment project. Two winners were announced in the medium category (projects costing between $25 million and $200 million)—Colorado DOT for the I-25 and US24/Cimarron Street Interchange Design-Build project and Nevada DOT for its USA Parkway project. California DOT (Caltrans) won in the large category (projects costing more than $200 million) for its SR-91 Corridor Improvement project.
Three state DOTs won in the Best Use of Technology and Innovation category. Caltrans Highway 1/Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge Replacement and South Dakota DOT’s High Friction Surface Treatment project shared first place in the small category. Colorado DOT’s Linking Lookout—US 6 and 19th Street project won in the medium category.
Two state DOTs won awards in the Operations Excellence category. South Dakota DOT’s U.S. 14/6th Street project won in the small category, while Caltrans Route 191 Realignment Project: Taming the Curves won in the medium category.
Winners in the three remaining regions will be announced throughout the summer. The three highest-scoring projects from each region will be included in the “Top 12.” Those 12 projects will compete for the Grand Prize, selected by an independent panel of industry judges, and the Socrata People’s Choice Award, chosen by the general public through online voting. The top two winners also receive $10,000 cash awards, to be donated to a charity or scholarship of the state DOT’s choosing. Online voting begins Aug. 30. The winners of the top two awards will be announced Sept. 23, at the AASHTO Annual Meeting in Atlanta.

Is ‘Holistic Dentistry’ An Important Movement Or A Pointless Term?
One of the latest fads in dentistry is the emergence of the “holistic” dentist or orthodontist. There are several myths concerning the relatively new term and some people have wondered if an entirely new specialty has emerged.
Advertisements from coast to coast are suddenly proclaiming that “holistic dentistry” will provide a much more calm, serene experience than other dental practices. Those who use the term portray themselves as more loving of the environment, less likely to pull a tooth and more likely look out for the entire body, not just the mouth.
“There are several myths concerning the new term ‘holistic dentistry,’ ” says Dr. Jamie Reynolds, an orthodontist, national and international lecturer and author of World Class Smiles Made in Detroit (www.AskDrReynolds.com). “There is certainly room for a little clarity so patients can judge for themselves.”
Reynolds says the first problem is that there is no agreement of what the terms “holistic dentistry or holistic orthodontics” means. The terms are not defined or, more importantly, regulated.
Reynolds says the following myths need to be debunked for consumers:
“The truth is that anybody can slap the term ‘holistic” on the front of their practice and some people may think that means they offer a type of more gentle or sympathetic care,” Reynolds said. “I wouldn’t be surprised to see holistic car dealerships soon. The bottom line is that holistic is a marketing term, not a professional designation.”
About Dr. Jamie Reynolds
Dr. Jamie Reynolds (www.AskDrReynolds.com) is recognized on an annual basis as one of the top orthodontists in metro Detroit. His book, World Class Smiles Made in Detroit, puts an emphasis on the many benefits of having a great smile. Reynolds – who is a national and international lecturer on high-tech digital orthodontics and practice management – attended the University of Michigan for both his undergraduate education and dental studies, and did his orthodontic residency at the University of Detroit-Mercy.
