"Go back" day 2

  • President Donald Trump doubled down on his racist attack on four Democratic congresswomen on Monday. He falsely claimed Rep. Ilhan Omar sympathized with Al Qaeda and said the four women should apologize to him for their foul language [NYT].
  • The four congresswomen tore into Trump during a news conference on Monday, slamming the "bile of garbage" that comes from his mouth [Politico].
  • The House is set to vote Tuesday on a resolution condemning Trump for his comments [CNN].
  • Texas Democrat Al Green says he will force a vote on impeachment in the House over Trump's bigotry [The Hill].
  • Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden slammed Trump's "flat racist" tweets, saying "he should go home" [Politico].

Debt crisis. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shot down a White House plan for a short-term increase in the debt ceiling if Congress can't agree to a spending deal. Congress has just 7 working days left before leaving town for the August recess [WaPo].

2020

  • Nearly half of the Democratic presidential hopefuls spent more money than they raised during the last quarter, a reality that may end up winnowing the huge field [Politico].
  • GOP mega-donors are pouring money into the Trump re-election effort [Politico].
  • President Trump's re-election campaign is spending heavily to attract small donors [NYT].

Immigration. A new Trump administration rule would block most migrants coming to the U.S. from seeking asylum [NYT].

Boring but important. The White House says the federal deficit will pass $1 trillion this year. It will be the first time in the nation's history the deficit has exceeded that level [The Hill].

White House vs. Congress. White House counselor Kellyanne Conway defied a congressional subpoena on Monday and refused to show up for a hearing with the House Oversight Committee. Conway ignored the summons at the direction of President Trump [Politico].

Trade. The tariffs collected by the U.S. from China is not enough to cover the money the Trump administration is spending to bail out farmers who are impacted by the trade war [NYT].

North Korea. Officials warned that country may resume missile tests in response to planned military exercises involving the U.S. and North Korea [WaPo].

Climate. A terrifying new study says hundreds of U.S. cities could see an entire month each year with heat-index temperatures soaring above 100 degrees by 2050 if global warming continues unchecked [USA Today].

Gov. Herbert lowers flags in honor of Sergeant First Class Elliott Robbins
Gov. Gary R. Herbert has ordered the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the State of Utah on Thursday, July 18, 2019 to honor the life and service of Sergeant First Class Elliott Jerome Robbins, who will be laid to rest that day with military honors at Ben Lomond Cemetery in North Ogden, Utah.

Utah Community Builder Project priorities announced
The Salt Lake Chamber announced the project priorities for the Utah Community Builder Foundation, the Chamber's non-profit organization to address critical social and community issues through strategic partnerships. Priorities for the new year will include addressing intergenerational poverty, behavioral health, as well as immigration and child care.
