Dear KidsOutAndAbout.com readers:
I deeply adore a man who is not my husband.
Now, before you go making assumptions: The man is educator Salman Khan, of Khan Academy, which is an online learning resource that can teach your kids just about anything—FOR FREE. In 2006, Sal started creating video tutorials in math and science to help one of his cousins, posting them to YouTube. That led to his founding Khan Academy, a not-for-profit organization whose goal is to educate people around the world, of all ages, in all kinds of subjects. Sal's vision is that information should be free, to everyone, world-wide; if you can get to YouTube, you can learn all kinds of important stuff, for school and for life, without paying a cent. He is a man after my own heart.
But... love? Really, Deb? Yes. You know how, when you encounter someone who profoundly improves your kids' lives, you want to fling your arms around the person who made it possible? It's that kind of love. This summer has been the Summer of Standardized Test Prep in the Ross house, and Khan Academy alone has made that bearable, both financially and psychologically.
As you can imagine, it's been stressful around here. Fortunately, Khan Academy's program analyzes exactly what students are getting wrong on the kinds of problems that stump them, and teaches what they're missing. You can even choose to let Khan Academy interface with your kids' online College Board record if they've already taken the SAT; it analyzes their previous tests to see where they especially need help, and shows improvement bit by bit. Khan Academy has even gamified the test prep process so it's a little less tedious: Those little energy points she gathers along the way have really helped my daughter stay positive. And did I mention it's FREE? Oh, yeah, right, I did. Here's the link to the Khan Academy SAT Test Prep section in case your kids need this too.
Of course, the best thing you can do when you encounter a wonderful online resource is to tell a friend. Well, I'm hereby telling 110,000 friends about Khan Academy. Thanks, Sal. Sending you much love from my little corner of the globe.
