UK delegation visits Wheeling Hospital in West Virginia to finalize unique medical degree
General Medical Council and University of Leicester delegates visit partner hospital near Pittsburgh to discuss new Medicine MBChB-USA degree for US students
A high-ranking delegation from the UK’s General Medial Council, and the University of Leicester, a top 35 global institution for Clinical Medicine in the Shanghai Ranking of World Universities, have visited Wheeling Hospital near Pittsburgh to finalize plans for a new, unique university degree for US medical students.
The new ‘Medicine MBChB-USA’ degree will provide US students with world-class study facilities at the University of Leicester in the UK and clinical training in West Virgina’s leading Wheeling Hospital. It will commence in September 2019 and is recruiting now.
The course has been created for US citizens and lawful permanent residents who, upon completion of the degree, will be eligible to apply for US Medical Residency Positions.
The course offers a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree, the UK professional qualification equivalent to an MD in the USA and is aligned with the US embedded medical curriculum (including specific USMLE modules), thus enabling graduates to practice medicine in the USA.
During the visit to Wheeling Hospital from April 2-3, 2019, the University of Leicester and Wheeling Hospital senior managements teams finalized the course and facilities available for students including the integration of Promoting Excellence, equivalency between the UK and US delivery of education, the USMLE, integration into the UK curriculum, medical education at Wheeling, capacity for student numbers, quality assurance of medical education in the USA, and student support.
The UK delegation also had a tour of the clinical facilities at Wheeling Hospital including all key medical and surgical facilities at the main site, the Continuous Care Centre that opened in July 2018, Harrison Community Hospital and Wellness Centre.
“As part of Wheeling Hospital’s long commitment to medical education, we are pleased to join the excellent network of teaching hospitals associated Leicester Medical School,” noted Dr. C. Clark Milton, Wheeling Hospital Director of Medical Education. “In addition to our outstanding faculty and staff, the students will have access to an abundance of excellent schools, comfortable neighborhoods, shopping destinations, parks, recreation, theater and music, and professional sports. We are sure the newest members to our community will feel welcome in Wheeling.”
“We are very excited to launch this innovative and truly collaborative new course to be able to contribute to the training of the future doctors of the USA. Our modern curriculum and 45 years of UK experience will be combined with clinical placements in the USA to create a unique program for the US medical system,” said Professor Philip Baker, Dean of Medicine, University of Leicester.
“This new program has been designed to meet the needs and challenges of modern healthcare in the USA. The course is a patient-focused international collaboration, such that students will have unrivalled opportunities to work with the kind of patients that they’ll be treating throughout their careers whilst comparing and contrasting two healthcare systems.
“We are an internationally-recognized, world-class medical research institution and offer outstanding facilities at our state-of-the-art George Davies Centre, access to scientists and clinicians at the cutting-edge of medical research, and clinical attachments from Year 1 and for each subsequent year firstly in the UK and then through our clinical partners in the USA,” added Dr John Dormer, Clinical Associate Professor in Medical Education & Honorary Consultant Histopathologist, University of Leicester.

Our Centenary
On 11 November 2018 (Armistice Day), the University of Leicester marked 100 years since the end of the First World War. This date also marks the beginning of the story to create a university in Leicester as a living memorial to honor those who made sacrifices during the Great War. This is reflected in the University's motto Ut vitam habeant – 'so that they may have life'. The University was founded as Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland University College in 1921. This short film tells the story of our founding.

Radical liberals want to bring socialism to America. Will you fight back now by chipping in to fight socialism?
James,
If you've turned on the news recently, you've seen it. There's a rapidly growing appetite for radical, socialist policies among liberals in politics and our media.
It's disturbing.
But the way Washington is responding is even worse.
Too many politicians are thrilled by the idea of socialism in America. An overreaching government would mean more power for them! Unfortunately, it would also mean less power, less opportunity, and less freedom for all of US.
CHIP IN $ 25: SAY NO TO SOCIALISM >>
No matter how appealing the media makes it sound - or how many people cheer at liberal rallies where they call for nationalized healthcare and the end of capitalism - socialism DOES NOT WORK. It's never worked for anyone and it will not work for America.
At Heritage Action we are committed to working with conservative activists like you who are willing to stand up to the radicals who would turn our nation into places like Venezuela. And right now, we need your help to make sure every member of our grassroots army has all the resources they need to defend our freedom and reject socialism. Can you chip in today to help out?
We already know the truth about this radical agenda. If they succeed, bureaucrats and political elites win and WE lose.
That’s why this fight is so important. We need to make sure every conservative on our side is prepared to fight.
Please, chip in today to help us continue our fight to defend American values and REJECT socialism.
Thank you,
Tim Chapman
