• Opioid use
Patients in the U.S. and Canada are seven times more likely to receive an opioid prescription after surgery than patients in Sweden. That's the conclusion of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, who also found that while the U.S. and Canada have similar opioid prescription rates, U.S. patients tend to receive higher doses of medication. “Our findings reveal stark differences in prescribing practices across the three countries and suggest real opportunities to encourage more judicious use of opioids before and after surgery for patients in the United States and Canada,” said researcher Mark D. Neuman. (EDITORS: Additional information)
• Farm of the future
Veterinary researchers are developing a “farm of the future” that can help make U.S. pig farming more sustainable. A goal of the University of Pennsylvania’s Swine Teaching and Research Center is to reshape the environmental and social impacts of raising swine using humane conditions and efficient resource usage. At Penn's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pa., for example, a model pig farm includes free-roaming sows implanted with RFID chips that allow them to receive personalized, pre-measured amounts of organic feed so that the animals do not have to compete with one another to eat. (EDITORS: Additional information)
• Info gerrymandering
Social networks can impede the free flow of information. In what scientists have termed “information gerrymandering,” it’s not geographical boundaries that confer bias but the structure of social networks, such as social media connections. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and University of Houston conducted experiments with thousands of human subjects and analyzed a variety of real-world networks, finding examples of information gerrymandering on Twitter, in the blogosphere, and in U.S. and European legislatures. “People come to form opinions, or decide how to vote, based on what they read and who they interact with,” said Joshua Plotkin of Penn. “Information gerrymandering can induce a strong bias in the outcome of collective decisions. This tells us that we need to be cautious about relying on social media for communication because the network structure is not under our control and yet it can distort our collective decisions.” (EDITORS: Additional information)

Art Alexakis of Everclear
Premieres New Single "The Hot Water Test"
Listen Exclusively via Billboard
Debut Solo Album Sun Songs
Due Out Oct. 11th via The End Records/BMG
On Tour Next Month
Los Angeles, CA - September 12, 2019 - Art Alexakis, the charismatic frontman of the multi-platinum rock band Everclear, is premiering his new single "The Hot Water Test" via Billboard. Listen here: https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/rock/8529830/everclear-art-alexakis-multiple-sclerosis-diagnosis-debut-solo-single-hot-water-test. Titled after the hot bath tests used to diagnose multiple sclerosis in the early 20th century, the personal single recounts the day Alexakis was diagnosed with the disease. "Doctors would diagnose MS by putting their patients into super-hot water and wait for them to start showing symptoms," he elaborates. "It was pretty barbaric and miserable, and just one example of the the kind of experiences that people with MS, autoimmune diseases, cancer, or for that matter any debilitating disease, have to deal with all the time."
"The Hot Water Test" is drawn from Alexakis' debut solo album, Sun Songs, due out October 11th via The End Records/BMG. The long-awaited solo record marks a new chapter in the legendary frontman's career, as he explores sounds, styles and lyrical subjects outside the normal realm of Everclear. In support, Alexakis will embark on a solo tour, including select US, UK and Ireland dates, next month. See below for a full list of dates. For more information, please visit: http://everclearmusic.com.
While Art Alexakis has always been the driving force behind Everclear, his solo work finally offers him an opportunity to create music solely on his own, without any preconceived notion or collaborative influence as to what it should sound like. On his debut solo album Sun Songs, Alexakis shares, "For the most part, it's an acoustic singer-songwriter type of album. It's not about making another Everclear record; it's about doing something that's just me."
Creating outside of the Everclear realm has given Alexakis the chance to explore styles and sounds that don't necessarily work for his band. His solo work will push the boundaries of what to expect from an Art Alexakis composition, as he cites everything from classic country to hip hop, to the great acoustic singer-songwriters of the 1970's as major influences for this record. "I'm pushing my ability and pushing the envelope, and having fun at the same time," Alexakis continues. "I've always wanted to do something like this."
The long-awaited solo record ultimately comes at a time of transition in Alexakis' life. After announcing his Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis earlier this year, the formidable songwriter is in the most honest and vulnerable place he has ever been.
"The Hot Water Test", the lead single from Sun Songs, will be available digitally tomorrow, September 13th. Sun Songs will be available digitally and in CD and vinyl formats on Friday, October 11th.

Why do we still celebrate Constitution Day?
By Timothy R. Snowball
Word count: 633
We live in seemingly divisive times. Politicians are at each other’s throats. Talking heads on the network news explain to us all the reasons we should hate and mistrust each other. Confidence in public institutions is at an all-time low. There seems to be nothing but bad news.
Then we notice an oft-neglected holiday on our calendars: Constitution Day.
This federal holiday commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787. And as we all learned in high school civics class, the Constitution defines the structure of our federal government. It is the most remarkable political charters in history.
This may not mean much to the average American mired in modern negativity. We can’t help but wonder: Why do we still celebrate Constitution Day?
We celebrate Constitution Day because that historic document, along with its later affixed Bill of Rights, is the legal means by which “We the People” ensure that the government serves its vital purposes without violating our rights.
Sure, a lot has changed since 1787. The Constitution, as originally written, left a lot of people out. The long fight for equality for blacks, women, and other groups continues to this day. But one thing has not changed: the need for a government that will secure our individual rights and do so without abusing its powers.
The fight for rights is the story of America.
Ultimately, the Constitution was not enacted for the politicians, pollsters or the pundits. The Constitution was enacted by the people for the benefit of the people. It is up to the people to preserve, protect and defend it. Consider just a few recent examples of average people stepping up to defend their rights:
Each of these individuals, in asserting their constitutional rights in court, also bolsters those same protections for every other American. The battle for individual liberty begun by the Framers of the Constitution continues to this day through the actions of brave individuals like Erica, Mike and Peter.
As long as government exists, there will be the threat of the abuse of government power. But there is something we can do about it.
We celebrate Constitution Day not only because of the history behind it but for the role it still serves in the lives of all Americans. The original Constitution may be faded yellow parchment, but the protections the Constitution embodies are just as vital now as they were in 1787.
Happy Constitution Day!

Programmers' Day on Friday The 13th:
How Scary It Would Be If All Programmers Disappeared
September 12, 2019 Programmers’ Day is celebrated on the 256th day of each year. 256 is the number of distinct values that can be represented by an eight-bit byte. Usually, the 256th day is August 13th (except for leap year). But this year it is also Friday the 13th! What could go wrong, right?
Since Friday the 13th is a common day for scary accidents, let’s imagine what would happen if all programmers would disappear this Friday.
Not Much At First
To be honest, people wouldn’t notice the disappearance for quite some time. Most of the systems would work on their own for a while. Initially, problems would begin after first bugs or power outages. Programmers deal with bugs and help systems to get back on track after something happens. And without them, systems would become unstable one by one.
The First Ones Uh-Oh’s
The first drawbacks would come up from your phone. The phone itself would still work. But without proper maintenance from programmers, most apps would stop working pretty soon. Forget the Uber and better check the local taxi phone number. E-banking services would stuck, so get your cash before it's too late. And if you feel like sharing that cute pic of your puppy, you should print it first.
Not all problems would be related to your phone. Programmers take care of many daily objects around us. Modern elevators would stop working. So every day would be a leg day with all those stairs. Feels good when your smart coffeemaker can prepare your coffee. But without programmers, it’s not that smart anymore. With programmers gone, even your smartwatch is just a watch.
Innovations Are Lost
You might be still dreaming about that Marty McFly's hoverboard. But this dream is over without programmers. There are a lot of promising innovations, but they still need some finishing touches. And with no programmers to be found, all those self-driving cars and flying skateboards are over.
Not only innovations would be at risk to be lost. A lot of information about everything we know has been digitized and put online. Programmers who work at hosting provider Hostinger suggest, that without them most websites would become unavailable over time. So all information that was kept online, would be unavailable too. When there is no Wikipedia left, you should buy an encyclopedia or two just in case.
Wait, That Was Also Programmed?
Without programmers, it wouldn’t be just uncomfortable, it would also be quite expensive. How do you like those colorful dresses and fancy patterned suits? Well, they would become extremely expensive since, without the help of programmers, patterned textiles should be done by hand. The same goes for kitchen tiles, cozy carpets, cute coffee cups. It would be a luxury to live in style.
In The Long Run
Some problems would become visible only over time. For example, traffic lights are being programmed. Without programmers they would never become more efficient than they are now. In places with growing populations, this would mean way more traffic jams. Once cities have grown, forget your Google maps. They might still show you directions for the old roads, but if there are any renewals, you are lost.
All those examples are just the tip of an iceberg. It is possible, that If programmers would disappear, it would affect our lives in unthinkable ways. But luckily it is not the case. So this Friday is a perfect day to thank all the programmers for the easier life they gave us.

The fund will have a global mandate with a focus on finding quality smaller cap companies that Grandeur Peak believes are out-of-favor or otherwise undervalued.

— Randy Pearce, CIO
SALT LAKE CITY, UT, USA, September 13, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Grandeur Peak Global Advisors® announced that on Tuesday, September 17th, it will launch its first new fund since 2015. The new fund, the Grandeur Peak Global Contrarian Fund (GPGCX), will have a global mandate with a particular focus on finding quality smaller cap companies that are out-of-favor or otherwise undervalued relative to what Grandeur Peak believes to be their long-term potential.
The Global Contrarian Fund will leverage the global research of the Grandeur Peak team, but take larger and broader positions in out-of-favor and undervalued companies, sectors, and geographies. Lead portfolio manager, Mark Madsen, said “the Fund’s holdings will typically fall into one of these five categories:
• Core Contrarian: High quality companies in an out-of-favor industry or geography.
• Fallen Angels: Quality growth companies that we believe have hit a temporary “bump in the road.”
• Undiscovered Growth: High quality companies that are growing, with nice headroom, but are not yet broadly discovered.
• Under the Radar: Quality companies with underappreciated growth opportunities.
• High Yield or Sum of Parts: Strong income producer with lower earnings growth; undervalued when aggregating total assets.”
Randy Pearce, Chief Investment Officer, provided additional background: “The Global Contrarian Fund has been on our product plan since the inception of the firm. Finding high quality undiscovered and undervalued companies is part of our daily work. Some of these opportunities don’t fit neatly into our growth-focused funds, so we tread lightly or wait for growth to return before buying. The Global Contrarian Fund will allow us to concentrate a portfolio in these kinds of very interesting long-term investments. The general market shift towards passive investing (ETFs and Index Funds) makes this product additionally interesting because there are plenty of good small/micro-cap companies that aren’t captured by passive products and are trading at even more appealing valuations. We’ve waited eight years to launch this fund. The timing feels right both for our team and the market opportunity. When we get a contrarian position right, we believe it will lead to greater price appreciation due to the dual effect of earnings growth and Price/Earnings expansion.”
The portfolio managers for the Global Contrarian Fund will be Mark Madsen (CFA, MAcc) and Keefer Babbitt (CFA), with Robert Gardiner (CFA) as the Guardian Portfolio Manager; but as with all Grandeur Peak funds, the entire research team will be involved in analyzing and finding appropriate positions for the Fund. “Managing a ‘value’ fund within a growth shop has unique advantages” added Mr. Gardiner. “I managed two value funds at my prior firm and found that having a growth mindset helps you find and recognize what may be the most rewarding value opportunities.”
Similar to the other smaller cap Grandeur Peak funds, the firm expects to limit the assets in the Global Contrarian Fund to allow the Fund to continue to purchase small and micro-cap stocks without being hindered by assets under management.
About Grandeur Peak Global Advisors

Our bias is towards micro to mid-cap companies because we believe we can find faster growth among these firms, and often at better valuations due to the lack of analyst coverage.
