Tax Modernization and Revenue Restructure Town Hall Meetings Begin Tuesday, June 25

Legislative Task Force invites the public to attend statewide listening tour June 25 – July 30

SALT LAKE CITY – A series of revenue restructure town hall meetings start Tuesday, June 25 in Brigham City. The town hall meetings are part of a statewide listening tour being conducted by the Tax Restructuring and Equalization Task Force. In the 2019 General Legislative Session, the Utah Legislature created the task force to look for ways to address the state’s outdated tax structure, get public input and suggest solutions.

“Because we’ve always had the foresight to build for tomorrow, our state has always been at the forefront of economic stability,” said Sen. Lyle Hillyard, co-chair of the Tax Restructuring and Equalization Task Force.

“Let’s work together to take the long view and act now to preserve for future generations a quality of life defined by economic prosperity, incomparable recreation, first-rate education, advanced transportation and clean air,” says Rep. Francis Gibson, co-chair of the Tax Restructuring and Equalization Task Force.

The town hall meetings will begin with an open house for attendees to learn about the issue, the task force process and have questions answered. Following the open house, the task force will provide a presentation on the challenges the state budget is facing and the public will have the opportunity to provide input. Additionally, an informational website will be available with an online form for the public to comment and provide feedback throughout the process. Currently, Utahns enjoy a high quality of life and the benefits of a strong economy. As a result, the state is experiencing significant growth as businesses and families increasingly recognize Utah as an exceptional place to work, live and play. This growth and the state’s modern economy, however, have outpaced an outdated 1933 revenue structure. This imbalance in state revenue sources, combined with restrictions on revenue use, could affect the quality of life for which Utah has long been known. If the imbalance is not addressed, it will negatively impact important funding priorities such as transportation, water, air quality, public safety, recreation and health care.

New Album

Order In Decline

Out July 19 on Hopeless Records

June 18, 2019 - Sum 41 have dropped an emotionally charged ballad today with the release of "Never There." Dedicated to single parents everywhere, the song is a personal letter from lead singer Deryck Whibley. "Never There" is one of the band's heaviest songs to date, but in an entirely different way. This marks the third single from upcoming album Order In Decline, out July 19th.Fans can view the music video for "Never There" now at http://smarturl.it/NeverThereVideo.

"I never wanted to write this song, it just kind of poured out of me", said Whibley. "I tried to fight it at first but there was no stopping it. I could tell I was writing about my dad, who I've never met and throughout my life it has always been a subject that I don't really think about or care about. It has never really bothered me and when I started thinking about why it never bothered me, I realized it was because my mum was so great and I have such a loving relationship with her. She was so strong as a single mother for my whole life that I never needed to think about my dad."

"Never There" joins previously released singles "A Death In The Family" and "Out For Blood", the latter of which has earned the band a spot in the Top 20 of a Billboard airplay chart for the first time in over 14 years. The single has also hit #1 at Sirius XM Octane, and has been streamed over 3 Million times on Spotify while the music video has been viewed over 2 Million times.

Armed with the most honest and intimate songs of his career, Whibley poured everything he had into the upcoming album. Producing, engineering, and mixing the album in his home studio, he pain-stakingly crafted and fine-tuned each song, highlighted by fast and full riffs, guitar solos from lead guitarist/backing vocalist Dave Brownsound, harmonious chords from guitarist Tom Thacker and the heavy, heart-thumping rhythm section of bassist/backing vocalist Cone McCaslin and drummer Frank Zummo.

Looking back at the band's storied 23+ year career, Order In Decline is undoubtedly Sum 41's heaviest and most aggressive album to date, while also being their most dynamic and raw. Due out July 19 via Hopeless Records, Order In Decline is available for pre-order now at http://smarturl.it/OrderInDecline.

Sum 41 will be co-headlining the inaugural Rockstar Energy Drink DISRUPT Festival this Summer on select dates throughout the United States and Canada.

June 28th Tax Deadline For Opportunity Zone Participation

The 2017 Federal Tax Cut & Jobs Act included one of the most powerful and flexible tax planning provisions in decades. It’s a great opportunity for Utah taxpayers and investors.

The Opportunity Zone Program allows taxpayers generating capital gains from real estate sales, stock sales, artwork, Bitcoin, intangibles and most other assets to roll over the all or a portion of the gain into a Qualified Opportunity Fund (QOF) within 180 days of when the tax gain is reportable and achieve the following benefits:

  1. Defer reporting the initial gain until December 2026.
  2. The investor also gets a 10% tax basis increase in their QOF investment in year five and another 5% increase in year seven – resulting in a permanent tax reduction.
  3. Most importantly, gains accruing after the investment into the QOF will be 100% tax-free upon sale if the investment is held for at least ten years.

However, to participate for any eligible calendar 2018 tax gains, action must be taken no later than June 28th.
