YMCA of Northern Utah in Partnership with the Armed Services YMCA Announces Summer Programs HEROES Rates for Qualifying Military Families

April 5th, 2018.  The YMCA of Northern Utah, in partnership with the Armed Services YMCA, is proud to offer a new program for children of qualifying military families at special rates on YMCA summer camp programs. Families with a parent or guardian who is currently an active duty service member in ranks E-1 to E-5, will qualify for the HEROES program rate. Recipients will receive a week of any YMCA Summer Day Camp for $50 or a week of any YMCA Summer Overnight Camp for $150 for each child; a savings of 75% on most programs.

The partnership between the YMCA of Northern Utah and the Armed Services YMCA was pursued to enhance opportunities for military families to participate in YMCA summer camp programs in Utah. Richard West, YMCA of Northern Utah CEO says: “We are excited about this new partnership which recognizes the dedication, sacrifice and service of military personnel and their families.”

YMCA summer camp programs provide an enriching, positive, and inclusive environment for youth that helps build confidence and provide opportunities to cultivate new friendships. A variety of programs are offered in Wasatch, Salt Lake, Summit, Davis, and Weber counties and include STEM, traditional, and excursion-based camps. The YMCA’s two overnight camps, Camp Roger and Camp Mill Hollow, offer week-long experiences in the beautiful Uinta Mountains with activities like archery, hiking, arts plus crafts, equestrian, backpacking, and orienteering and more along with campfires, songs, skits, s’mores and other traditional fun camp activities.

3 Things To Consider About Your 401(k)

When Changing Jobs

More people change jobs than ever before. The average American worker makes 12 employment moves before retirement, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

With all those transitions come important decisions, and high among them is what to do with their 401(k).

Numerous financial experts say one thing you usually shouldn’t do is leave your 401(k) behind with your former employer. Some 401(k) accounts are “orphaned” or abandoned every year either by their owner, former employer or plan administrator.

“It’s like cleaning out your old office; make sure you grab everything that’s important to you,” says Peter J. Strauss (www.peterjstrauss.com), an attorney, captive insurance manager and author of The Business Owner’s Definitive Guide to Captive Insurance Companies.

“When you leave a job and leave your 401(k), failing to roll it into a new retirement account, it’s leaving money in a drawer, and worse, with compound interest growth.”

Because of the tax penalty for early withdrawal, it’s not usually a good idea to cash out your 401(k) before age 59½. But Strauss says the advantages of having a 401(k), keeping it mobile with job moves, and continuing to grow it are vital for personal financial growth and retirement. He lists three consider about your 401(k) when changing jobs:

  • The employer match. “That can be a great windfall, but it’s important to make sure the matching money is vested prior to your departure,” Strauss says. “Otherwise, if you didn’t work there long enough and the match hadn’t vested, you’re not maximizing your savings.” So when choosing to leave a company, Strauss says it’s important to consider the timing. “Find out if all your 401(k) contributions have vested, so you make sure you get a bigger bang for your buck,” he says. “It may be worthwhile to stick around a little longer to make sure you get the entire company match to take with you.”
  • Rolling it into an IRA. An IRA offers more investment choices than 401(k) plans do, Strauss says. And typically, IRAs have lower costs to operate because they don’t carry the administrative fees that 401(k) plans do. “But remember, just like rolling your 401(k) over into your new company, you need to execute the transfer properly, or else you will owe taxes and fees.”
  • Roll into your new company’s plan. This is the simplest option of moving your 401(k) after a job move. Your funds remain in the same place and continue to grow. A bonus: 401(k) plans allow you to borrow more than an IRA for a first home.

“It’s a sense of comfort having a 401(k), and better, having one that’s not stagnant,” says Strauss. “If you one day go from ‘employee to employer’ and run your own business, you’ll have a heightened appreciation for it because of what it means to your employees. If you’re making a job change, don’t forget the retirement assets you’ve worked so hard for throughout your career.”

Raleigh, NC - April 20, 2018 - The wait is over for rock band Big Something's 5th studio album, The Otherside. The album premiered in full on Relix earlier this week, and has recently been featured on Jambase, Live For Live Music, Glide Magazine, and more. The Otherside is a follow up to 2017's Tumbleweed, the band's most critically acclaimed release to date. Big Something will celebrate the release with a 2 night performance at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater in Wilmington, NC during their event The Big What? Wilmington on April 27 & 28. For more information or to purchase the new album, please visit: www.bigsomething.com.

"This album is special for us in many ways. It felt like we were capturing an important moment together as a band and as brothers," shares vocalist/guitarist Nick MacDaniels. "We also wanted to pay homage to the original concept of making "an album" where sitting down and listening to the whole thing is an experience - 20 minutes per side with a break between and each side complements the other. This is the first time we've setup a release to fit perfectly on a vinyl record like that."

Bassist Doug Marshall adds: "The recording felt effortless. There was a certain vibe in the air. It felt like everything took a big jump.  In the songwriting and the performance. Everyone went to the next level. I'm very proud to have been a part of this album."

A 6 piece powerhouse with a sound that is both unique and timeless, Big Something fuses elements of rock, pop, funk, and improvisation to take listeners on a journey through a myriad of musical styles. It's no secret why this group has quickly become one of the most exciting new bands to emerge from the Southeast. Soaring guitars, E.W.I. (electronic wind instrument), synths, horns and alluring vocal hooks rise to the top of their infectious collection of songs and represent a sound that has caught the ears of such revered stalwarts as Umphrey's McGee, Moon Taxi, Galactic, moe., Robert Randolph, and even The B52s, who have all tapped Big Something as direct support.

The Otherside was recorded at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC with the help of Grammy-nominated producer and Carolina Music Awards Lifetime Achievement recipient - John Custer (Corrosion of Conformity) who has produced all 5 of the bands albums.

On The Otherside, Big Something continues to build upon the post-apocalyptic peyote trip imagery from Tumbleweed, concluding the story of a nomad who has made it to the other side of his journey wandering through the night towards a desert sunrise. The album also showcases a different musical side of the band with a heavier, more focused and soulful collection of 8 songs including "Smoke Signal" - a track that was written for the studio and has never been performed live.

The project is dedicated to the memory of the bands late lyricist and friend Paul Interdonato who tragically passed away on Dec 3, 2017 - the same day the band was setting up in the studio to record. Now each song carries a certain weight as the album features several of the last lyrical compositions that Paul ever wrote for Big Something. It is a thoughtful and poignant musical journey paying tribute to a lifelong friend with a brilliant imagination.

Big Something is Nick MacDaniels (vocals, guitar), Casey Cranford (sax, EWI), Jesse Hensley (lead guitar), Ben Vinograd (drums), Doug Marshall (bass), Josh Kagel (keys, trumpet), and Rhett Huffman (keys).
