June 28th Tax Deadline For Opportunity Zone Participation

The 2017 Federal Tax Cut & Jobs Act included one of the most powerful and flexible tax planning provisions in decades. It’s a great opportunity for Utah taxpayers and investors.

The Opportunity Zone Program allows taxpayers generating capital gains from real estate sales, stock sales, artwork, Bitcoin, intangibles and most other assets to roll over the all or a portion of the gain into a Qualified Opportunity Fund (QOF) within 180 days of when the tax gain is reportable and achieve the following benefits:

  1. Defer reporting the initial gain until December 2026.
  2. The investor also gets a 10% tax basis increase in their QOF investment in year five and another 5% increase in year seven – resulting in a permanent tax reduction.
  3. Most importantly, gains accruing after the investment into the QOF will be 100% tax-free upon sale if the investment is held for at least ten years.

However, to participate for any eligible calendar 2018 tax gains, action must be taken no later than June 28th.

DROWN THIS CITY

Sign to UNFD

Announce New EP

Alpha // Survivor Out July 5th

Reveal Lead Single "In Your Image"

Melbourne, AUS - June 20, 2019 - Freshly signed to UNFD and armed with their colossal new EP Alpha // Survivor, Melbourne post-hardcore band Drown This City are marking a definitive new era. With lead single "In Your Image" at the helm, the six-track EP marks a triumphant statement of resurgence for the group, who amid personal demons threatening their existence, bunkered down to refocus, reenergise and prepare for their ascension into this very moment. Alpha // Survivor is out Friday, July 5 via UNFD.

It's been a while since we last had a taste of music from Drown This City, and in the silence the band have been fervently rebuilding both as individuals and as a group. Lead vocalist Alex Reade explains that the five-piece have resurfaced a more solidified group than ever, and Alpha // Survivor harnesses all of their pain and triumph in a fierce six-track package.

"We've been through heart ache, break downs, low moments and the highest of highs and together have only gotten stronger," she explains. "We've supported each other to be powerful as well as vulnerable, and through this connection we've come out of dark times and rebuilt Drown This City, ready to be released in its new form."

Amid her own personal turmoil Reade was fascinated by the idea of both a powerful survivor and a broken victim residing in herself. Alpha // Survivor captures this heartache, but also harnesses a powerful message on the choice we all have to rise above our pain in power. 'Stay Broken' encapsulates this perfectly - its lyrics crying "Alpha, realise your power,"while lead single 'In Your Image' captures the mighty shift of the song's protagonist, Reade, from a broken victim into a powerful hero.

"You can be the most powerful creator in one moment, and the weakest broken soul in the next, it's just a choice, and the battle is only ever within yourself and with your thoughts," Reade explains. All of these songs are about that message and how they relate in love and life and an ongoing quest for self-discovery and empowerment.

"Don't be afraid of your own power, your own ability to heal and be strong and be above everyone else. Even if it's lonely up there - it's where you belong."

Reade adds that the band are beyond excited to be stepping into the UNFD family. "Although we are beside ourselves with energy, there's such a sense of calm now that we have a home, and more of a future than ever before in this band," she says. "We've all sacrificed blood, sweat and sanity, and to know we have support to show the world who we are is genuinely a dream come true."

Drown This City will celebrate the EP with a run of east coast shows in July and August. Alpha // Survivor is out Friday July 5 via UNFD

Stakeholders from four states gather for Drought Contingency Demand Management workshop

Salt Lake City (June 20, 2019) – Water levels in Utah’s rivers and reservoirs look plentiful now but the scene last fall told a different story when Gov. Gary R. Herbert issued an Executive Order declaring a state of emergency due to drought.

Stakeholders from Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming will join Utah water officials Friday during a Demand Management workshop to talk about the “what ifs” and “how tos” of water use under Drought Contingency Plans (DCPs). These stakeholders represent the Upper Colorado River Basin states, who, along with stakeholders from California, Arizona and Nevada (Lower Basin states), rely heavily on the Colorado River.

Leaders from all seven states recently joined the Department of the Interior and Bureau of Reclamation officials to sign DCPs after Congress approved and President Donald Trump signed a bill that allows the Upper Basin states to store water in Lake Powell. The DCPs are designed to reduce risks from ongoing drought and protect the water supply, which provides water to more than 40 million people and nearly 5.5 million acres of farmland across the western U.S. and Mexico.

“This workshop is the next step in determining how a demand management program will achieve the goal of safeguarding our precious resources,” Eric Millis, director of Utah’s Division of Water Resources said. “Stakeholders are coming together to share ideas and shape a program that will protect the Colorado River, Lake Powell, Lake Mead and its users during periods of drought.”

Demand management is one component of the DCPs, which comes at the request of the Secretary of the Interior to address drought and low reservoir levels. One concept that has already been tested is “voluntary compensated conservation” where water users suspend use in favor of payment.

“Overall, farmers seem to like the concept and want to see it progress into something more permanent,” said Jordan Nielson, Price River project manager with Trout Unlimited. “The progression of the demand management program is a positive step toward better water management and gives us options during drought years.”

Demand management programs help ensure the Upper Basin states will be able to release water to the Lower Basin states in times of drought by allowing water users to voluntarily send water to Lake Powell where it can be stored for future use.

“Under the program, Lake Powell would act like a bank account where each Upper Basin state can deposit saved water each year up to 500,000 acre feet,” said Millis. “It will take a number of  years to build this reserve, and it is a critical step toward better water management that benefits all Upper Colorado River users.”

The workshop will be held at the Department of Natural Resources, 1594 W. North Temple, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
