Dear KidsOutAndAbout readers:

When I was growing up in Cranford, NJ, a lovely retired couple lived in the house to the left of ours. My sister and I called them Auntie Lu and Uncle Roy, and they were fixtures on Sylvester Street. They were the types who would bring some of their kids' old toys down from the attic, arrange them on their front porch, and invite the neighborhood kids up for cookies and lemonade and a few games from the '50s.

Somewhere along the way, I'm pretty sure it was when I was about 6 years old, Auntie Lu decided that I was going to grow up to be President of the United States. I'm not sure exactly when or why she decided this, but she refused to be moved from this conviction. She reminded me about it often.

It was the 1970s, that delightful time to grow up, when the culture (at least the culture in Cranford, NJ) seemed relieved to leave all that nonsense about women's opportunities not being equal to men's opportunities safely in the past. Even Auntie Lu, who must have been in her 60s at the time, wasn't making a political statement about me someday being a woman President—she probably figured we'd pass that hurdle fairly soon—she just thought for some reason that I'd be a good one. Even when I informed her as I was going off to college that I was going to be an English major and was not particularly interested in political science, she smiled, nodded, and told me that was all right, that Presidents needed to be able to write well.

As you've no doubt gathered by this time, I'm not the President of the United States, and I'm not headed in that direction. But Auntie Lu's decades of unshakable confidence that I would be, or at least that I could be, did me no harm.

Everyone needs an absurdly overconfident cheerleader in his or her corner. Whose Auntie Lu are YOU?

How to Cure the Drop Out Rate in Youth Sports

Children who play youth sports have higher grades and greater involvement in volunteer work than those who don't.  They have greater confidence, self-esteem, and build stronger relationships with their peers.  Young athletes also have greater family attachment, more frequent interactions with parents, and are less likely to engage in risky behaviors.

Yet, over 70% of youth athletes drop out of sports before they enter high school.  Veteran soccer coach Chris McConnell offers parents some ideas to keep kids in the game.
