Dear KidsOutAndAbout readers:

You hear it said often that "It's the thought that counts."

This is sometimes true. It is true when your child brings you runny eggs, burnt toast, and crunchy coffee for Mother's Day. Of course, we SAY "It's the thought that counts," but we really mean "It's the effort that counts"--even when the hammer doesn't quite hit the nail on the head.

So when doesn't the thought count? The thought doesn't count when you only make a halfhearted push to do the right thing because you're just too lazy to take it all the way.

Take dog poop, for instance. Dog poop is either dealt with properly by the dog owner, or it's not, and there isn't any room in between. In my photo above, maybe the other dog owner justified not going back for the rebound when he didn't make the 3-pointer by rationalizing that he didn't want to get his feet wet in the snow. Maybe he had the flu. Maybe he just didn't care. Maybe he told himself, "It's the thought that counts." Whatever his reasoning, even dressed in a pretty pink cellophane package, his dog poop became our community's mess.

The first thing I said to myself when I saw that bag lying 12 inches away from the trash can was: "I bet the person who did this isn't a parent." How do I know this? Because when you become a parent, you suddenly realize that if something's gone awry, the only person available to get it straightened up or straightened out is you. It certainly isn't going to be the small creatures in your care. The essence of becoming a grownup is that you become the person who cleans up the dog poop.

You, like I, probably don't quite hit the nail on the head every time you try, but we both know the truth: It's the effort that counts. And the kids are watching.

Children in kindergarten through sixth grade can submit their original stories, complete with a minimum of five illustrations, now through April 15th. Stories can be fact or fiction as long as they are on the theme of space, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. Judging is based on creativity, storytelling, and quality of the illustrations. Winners will enjoy a special celebration with their families at the Natural History Museum of Utah, have their stories published online, and get to participate in a traveling art exhibit hosted by the Utah Division of Arts and Museums! Visit a Museum

At KidsOutAndAbout, we love museums. Science museums, art museums, historic sites, and of course, museums especially for kids. Museums offer opportunities for families to learn together, share conversations beyond the everyday routine, and meet professionals who are passionate about their collections.

Kids' museums are a great place to start, and you'll be surprised at how engaging they are, even for adults. We know that it can be daunting to take kids--especially young kids--to more grown-up museums at first, but we highly recommend it, so we have tons of ideas for making your outing successful. Our Publisher Debra Ross shares her tips on Getting Kids Excited About Visiting an Art Museum. Our Strategic Content Editor Katie Beltramo offers suggestions on Visiting a Not-Necessarily-for-Kids Museum With Kids.
