Sinclair Oil Takes Steps With the  Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation as Presenting Sponsor

SALT LAKE CITY (May 21, 2019) — More than 3 million Americans suffer from Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, collectively referred to as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Sinclair Oil Corporation is honored to serve as this year’s presenting sponsor of Salt Lake City Take Steps, a local event supporting the national Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation driven by volunteer walk teams who raise funds to impact treatment, research and life-giving programs for those with IBD.

Volunteers are still needed to help in fundraising to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases. Individuals may register to volunteer or to walk by visiting the website or contact Allison Kerr, Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, walk manager, at akerr@crohnscolitisfoundation.org or dial 646-965-2237.

WHAT: Salt Lake City Take Steps, the local Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation walk event, is part of a nationwide effort with events in cities across America. Salt Lake City is a part of the Rocky Mountain chapter that includes Utah, as well as Colorado and Wyoming.

WHEN & WHERE: Two events are designed to raise awareness and funds for the cause.

Saturday, June 15, 2019  • 10:00 a.m. check-in and festival start; 11:00 a.m. walk start • Location: Sugar House Park, 1330 East and 2100 South

Last week. Thursday, May 16, 2019 – 6:00-8:00 p.m. This event took place last week to kick off Salt Lake City Take Steps and featured Beth Launiere, women’s volleyball coach for the University of Utah, who was named Honored Hero for 2019 for the region.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES Jay Mick, vice president of Crude Supply and Trading for Sinclair, was diagnosed with IBD in the mid-‘90s around the age of 25 after suffering symptoms virtually his entire life. Years of research and improvements to treatment have been instrumental in bettering his quality of life. He suffers from an aggressive form of the disease which has led to two bowel surgeries. His current treatment regimen, made available through many years of pharmaceutical research, is working well. “I feel like I’ve been prescribed every drug available for this disease,” said Mick, “It’s through the support of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation that research occurs to help those of us who suffer.”      (more)

Mick’s daughter, McCallister (age 18), an aspiring ballerina, was diagnosed with IBD four years ago. The Micks have chosen to forgo pharmaceutical treatment for McCallister at this time and to treat her symptoms through a holistic approach.

Jay and McCallister will participate in this year’s Take Steps activities as the family has done for many years. Mick is the top fundraiser in the Rocky Mountain region, having already raised more than $7,000 of the local annual challenge of $50,000. Since getting involved with the walk in 2015, Mick has raised in excess of $22,000 for the Foundation. McCallister, following in her father’s steps, has been very active with the Foundation.

Other Sinclair employees, some diagnosed with IBD, will walk to support the Foundation on June 15. Representatives with Sinclair will also be on hand with giveaways and a photo booth for visitors to take photos with DINO, the famous Sinclair mascot.

Brent Walsh released his latest EP Are You Even There at All? last November via Equal Vision Records. The album was recorded with producer Courtney Ballard (I the Mighty, 5 Seconds Of Summer, All Time Low) at the MDDN Studios in Los Angeles, CA.

His first solo release in four years, Are You Even There at All? shows the growth of Walsh as an artist. He shares, "My creative inspiration is constantly changing, but I have over a decade and a half of experience now writing bodies of work that reflect a certain period of my life. '7' had a lot of sadness, and self-deprecation. 'Are You Even There at All' was written and recorded from a place of joy. Pain can be an incredible motivator. However, so can love."

Though similar to 7, Walsh experiments with blending genres, delicately balancing hip-hop and R&B with singer-songwriter and a cappella styles. Walsh explains, "The growth on this record came in the means of taking those things a step further in each direction, but with a more modern production approach. I wanted it to still be all over the map, but feel current."

On Are You Even There at All?, Walsh pulls from experience, experimenting and further honing his sound. The result proves Walsh's most ambitious and diverse yet, taking a bold step forward in his creative journey.

As the frontman of alternative rock band I the Mighty, Walsh has toured and shared stage with the likes of Coheed And Cambria, Deftones, Pierce The Veil, Say Anything, Glassjaw, and more. Last fall he hit the road solo alongside Kurt Travis on his "Eternity Forever Fantasy" tour.

Walsh is excited to be getting back on the road and bringing his newest songs to fans and friends across the country.

For most of us, going to the dentist is a simple routine trip, but what if you are a senior citizen who is homebound with no way of accessing proper dental care?

To address this pressing need, Senior Charity Care Foundation pitched to CFU's Social Investors Forum to fund a proposal for a mobile dentistry clinic that would bring the dentist to patients in senior apartments and care facilities - all at an affordable cost. Read the full story here.
