Scott Totman, a private business owner in Stansbury Park, is running as the Democratic Party nominee for Utah's 17th District Senate seat against Incumbent, Peter Knudson.
In a phone interview Mr. Totman, a former Republican, explained his position on a number of issues. He defined efficient government as “one that recognizes the opinions of the people, much more than government entities", and used the issue of same-sex marriage as an example; “That's something the public has not had a chance to vote on”, and "power needs to be pushed down as close to the individual as possible.”
Regarding immigration reform, he advocated for legal immigration, and advised that "a desire not to offend" is holding up progress in that area; “People don't stand up and say what they think for fear of offending somebody.” He likened it to the example of the Ten Commandments being forced from a courtroom.
He also stated that “for the longest time, America has conserved their own resources for a rainy day, and allowed reliance on foreign energy sources...we are not to be held ransom by some foreign country, we can look within and utilize some of the immense oil reserves that we've been hoarding.” Mr. Totman explained that he thought nuclear power was safe if it is properly managed, and that America needs to emphasize what it has, and use it for the benefit of Americans.
