Realizations and devotions to ponder in the Colorado 14ers
Friends Linda Kozacek and Leigh Legere share their journey in ‘Reaching the Summit: Reflections for the Journey’
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. When friends Linda Kozacek and Leigh Legere made the correlation between hiking gear and the armor of God, they knew they had to dig deeper. That is how “Reaching the Summit: Reflections for the Journey” (published by WestBow Press) was launched. Legere was laying out climbing gear for an attempt on a 14,000 ft. peak in Colorado (known as a "14er"), and Kozacek noticed the juxtaposition between hiking spiritually and worldly. Little did they know that it would be that particular 14er trek where Legere had a firsthand view of a Search and Rescue operation in the Colorado backcountry. That confirmed that they had to write this book.
“Reaching the Summit: Reflections for the Journey” is a Christian devotional guide which uses hiking, both literally and figuratively, to describe life's journeys full of peaks and valleys. Each chapter features one of the 54 peaks in Colorado that are 14,000 ft. and higher in elevation along with devotions and scriptures inspired by those mountains.
With the rise in popularity of climbing in Colorado, the authors wanted to give hikers something to ponder. “The Christian walk is full of ups and downs, just like the mountains,” Kozacek said. “These are our stories from the trail, but they could apply to anyone no matter where their journey takes them,” added Legere.

I love being outdoors; I love being active; and I wanted to challenge myself physically in ways that I never had before. About the Author
Linda Kozacek has worked in the nonprofit world for the past 20 years in the areas of education and poverty alleviation. She currently teaches a life skills class to clients transitioning out of incarceration. She is a wife, mother and grandmother and cherishes all three roles. Kozacek has grown to love the outdoors and enjoys pushing herself to new experiences. She and her husband, Kurt, live in Overland Park, Kansas, with their dogs, Atticus and Wrigley. In their free time, they like to spend their days chasing whimsy.
Leigh Legere hiked her first 14er over 25 years ago. She relishes her roles as wife, mother and grandmother. Being a jazzercise instructor and helping people achieve fitness goals brings Legere great joy. She is the author of a children’s book, “Do Antelope Eat Cantaloupe,” and enjoys traveling and volunteering at church. USDA Invests $3.3 Million in High-Speed Broadband for Rural Beaverhead County
WISDOM, Mont., Feb. 24, 2020 – Today, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development State Director Charles Robison joined Rep. Greg Gianforte to announce USDA has invested $3.3 million in a high-speed broadband infrastructure project that will create or improve rural e-Connectivity for 142 homes, businesses, farms and ranches in Beaverhead County. This is one of many funding announcements in the first round of USDA’s ReConnect Pilot Program investments.
“President Trump has made rural broadband access a top priority,” Robison said. “The businesses and ranches in Beaverhead County that will get connected through USDA’s investment will be able to expand their everyday operations. E-connectivity is vital to rural prosperity, and when rural Montana thrives, all of Montana thrives.”
Rep. Gianforte added, “Improving Montanans’ access to dependable broadband is critical to our rural communities. It will further empower our farmers, ranchers, small business owners and Montanans who want to work remotely. I appreciate the efforts of Secretary Perdue and the Trump administration to increase broadband access through the ReConnect Program. I’ll continue working to ensure our rural and frontier communities have reliable high-speed broadband, which will create more opportunities and improve access to health care.”
Southern Montana Telephone Company (SMT) will use a $3.3 million ReConnect Program grant to construct a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network in Beaverhead County. The 1,688-square-mile service area includes 109 households, 26 farms and ranches, seven businesses and the Grant Fire Station.
Improved broadband access in Beaverhead County will make a significant impact on agricultural and small businesses. Farmers and ranchers will be able to monitor their operations in real time and use high-speed internet to buy, sell or trade livestock.
Background:
In March 2018, Congress provided $600 million to USDA to expand broadband infrastructure and services in rural America. On Dec. 13, 2018, Secretary Perdue announced the rules of the program, called “ReConnect,” including how the loans and grants will be awarded to help build broadband infrastructure in rural America. USDA received 146 applications between May 31, 2019, and July 12, 2019, requesting $1.4 billion in funding across all three ReConnect Program funding products: 100 percent loan, 100 percent grant, and loan-grant combinations. USDA is reviewing applications and announcing approved projects on a rolling basis. Additional investments in all three categories will be made in the coming weeks.
These grants, loans and combination funds enable the federal government to partner with the private sector and rural communities to build modern broadband infrastructure in areas with insufficient internet service. Insufficient service is defined as connection speeds of less than 10 megabits per second (Mbps) download and 1 Mbps upload.
In December 2019, Agriculture Secretary Perdue announced USDA will be making available an additional $550 million in ReConnect funding in 2020. USDA will make available up to $200 million for grants, up to $200 million for 50/50 grant/loan combinations, and up to $200 million for low-interest loans. The application window for this round of funding opened on Jan. 31, 2020. Applications for all funding products will be accepted in the same application window, which will close on March 16, 2020.

In April 2017, President Donald J. Trump established the Interagency Task Force on Agriculture and Rural Prosperity to identify legislative, regulatory and policy changes that could promote agriculture and prosperity in rural communities. In January 2018, Secretary Perdue presented the Task Force’s findings to President Trump. These findings included 31 recommendations to align the federal government with state, local and tribal governments to take advantage of opportunities that exist in rural America. Increasing investments in rural infrastructure is a key recommendation of the task force. SALT LAKE CITY (Feb. 24, 2020) — The American Red Cross urges the public to join its lifesaving mission by giving blood or platelets this March in celebration of Red Cross Month. Every day, thousands of patients depend on blood donations to help save their lives – patients like Heath Cornford who spent his first 217 days of life in the hospital. Born in February 2018 with an abnormal narrowing of the heart, Heath has undergone many complex surgeries – including a heart transplant – and required a number of blood transfusions.
“I can’t tell you how thankful we are for the lifesaving donations that saved our son,” said his mom, Mylinda Cornford. “Blood is something you can donate for free. You can make an impact, save a life and give back to your community.”
Heath recently celebrated his second birthday and is a thriving, energetic toddler.

Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. Volunteers needed
Another way to support the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross is to become a volunteer transportation specialist and deliver lifesaving blood products to local area hospitals. Volunteer transportation specialists play a very important role in ensuring an ample blood supply for patients in need by transporting blood and blood products.
