Helen Elaine shares message of compassion in debut work, ‘A Safe Place to Call Home’
OREGON CITY, Ore. — A young boy feels caught in the middle when his parents disagree and fight with one another in Helen Elaine’s children’s book, “A Safe Place to Call Home” (published by Balboa Press). A fully illustrated story, the book shares a message of compassion and encourages children to not take responsibility for their parent’s disagreements.
“Having grown up in a home where my parents disagreed often and having been through a divorce as an adult with children I know firsthand how this can affect a child,” Elaine explains. “At the time I didn’t know what to say or do to alleviate some of the stress that was put on my children. So I felt inspired to share what I’ve learned with time, to hopefully help another family in crises.”
Meant for families with children of divorced or separated parents or couples struggling with fighting in the home, “A Safe Place to Call Home” offers questions at the end to help open a dialogue between parent and child. Elaine intends to donate a portion of the proceeds from this book to www.childhelp.org – a nonprofit organization dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse.
Her hope is that young readers caught in the middle see “That both parents love them, and when parents disagree it has nothing to do with the child.”
