Vernal, Utah (September 27, 2016)—Dinosaurland in Vernal, Utah is known for its fascinating dinosaur relics. You may have seen the Wall of Bones or the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum, but there is so much more to do than most people realize. McConkie Ranch Petroglyphs: If you or your kids are into Native American petroglyphs, this is the place to come. The McConkie trail leads to clear, vibrant, abundant and bigger than normal petroglyphs. The amazing rock art and nice overlooks makes this adventure complete. This ranch is privately owned but open to the public.
Sheep Creek Geological Loop: This well-maintained gravel road follows Sheep Creek into the colorful fall mountains west of Flaming Gorge Reservoir, a perfect family drive. It follows the visually dramatic Uinta Fault and then loops back to Highway 44. There are interpretive signs along the drive describing geological features and wildlife in the area.
Fantasy Canyon: It’s a little difficult to get to, but the “Devil’s Playground” is worth the trip. The cool geologic features twist into crazy and unusual rock shapes. The canyon rocks are like clouds whose features turn into shapes and animal figures. Not many know about this unique spot.
John Jarvie Historic Ranch: The ranch is a great place to visit for some late 1800 American western history. Families can spend time learning about John Jarvie, known as "the sage of the Uintahs,” and check out and interact with his ranch, including a general store, a dugout, the stonehouse, the blacksmith shop, the waterwheel and a cemetery.
Ouray National Wildlife Refuge: This is the place to come to see nature at its best. The Green River provides cover and food for many wildlife species including, porcupines, Canada geese, grebes, owls, rabbits, prairie dogs, cranes, muskrats, mule deer and more. The refuge is a natural zoo adventure.
