Ken Garff Urging Drivers to Prevent Unnecessary Accidents
During National Tire Safety Week

Salt Lake City, UtahJune 2, 2014 – With summer travel season quickly approaching, Ken Garff is encouraging motorists during National Tire Safety Week, June 1-7, to prevent unnecessary accidents by performing essential maintenance on their cars and tires before traveling.

“Families are often so busy packing and preparing to leave on vacation that they forget to inspect their vehicles and tires thoroughly before leaving,” said Brett Hopkins, Ken Garff CEO. “Consider the fact that your tires are the only thing between the road and your family. When we’re traveling at high speeds, inadequate tires can have devastating consequences.”

According to Tire Wise from safercar.gov, there are nearly 11,000 tire-related crashes annually in the U.S. with nearly 200 fatalities, which are often caused by people driving on compromised and worn down tires.

Ken Garff suggests motorists follow these four tips before traveling this summer season:

  1. Check the vehicle’s tire pressure with a pressure gauge regularly, or at least once a month. The amount of pressure needed is displayed on each tire and found in the vehicle’s owner’s manual. Properly inflated tires can also save motorists 11 cents per gallon of gas.
  2. Check each tire’s tread regularly, both inside and outside the wheel well, when preparing to travel long distances. Good tire tread can increase safety, car durability and fuel efficiency.
  3. Conduct a penny test by placing a penny with Lincoln’s head upside down in the tread. If Lincoln’s head is visible, the tread is worn down and it’s time to replace the tires. Motorists should also avoid replacing only one tire at a time to prevent uneven wear. Tires should be replaced in pairs, with the newest tires on the back.
  4. Rotate, balance and align tires regularly with a qualified technician. Regular rotation and alignment will increase the life of the tire, prevent the vehicle from veering and ensure any warrantees remain intact.
