The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh, directed by Jared Larkin. Running June 13-15, 21-22, 28-29, 2019 at 7:30PM with a 2PM matinee on June 29.

Set in a dingy cottage in a remote part of Galway, The Beauty Queen of Leenane tells the darkly comic tale of Maureen Folan, a lonely woman in her early forties, and her aging and dependent mother, Mag. Constantly at her mother’s beck and call, Maureen takes revenge by feeding her lumpy Complan and hurling the occasional insult. Escape comes in the form of Pato Dooley, who is about to go to Boston. When Mag interferes once too often, Maureen decides the time has come to break free.

This multiple Tony Award Winning play is written by the same acclaimed author as In Bruges and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Martin McDonagh. One of his several Irish dark comedies, The Beauty Queen of Leenane is a brutally surprising and darkly comedic story that captures the monotonous life of mother and daughter in rural Galway.

Utah Humane announces new executive director
Gene Baiershcmidt retires after 31 years, replaced by Vaughn Maurice

The Humane Society of Utah (Utah Humane) introduced its new executive director, Vaughn Maurice, during the seventh annual Wags to Wishes gala on May 11, 2019. Maurice started the new position on April 15, replacing former executive director, Gene Baierschmidt.

After 31 years as executive director, Baierschmidt announced his retirement in November 2018. A national search was conducted and Maurice was selected by the Utah Humane board of directors.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to represent an organization that saves thousands of pets each year and has built a great community reputation,” said Maurice. “In the weeks that I have been here, I’ve been impressed by the professional staff, hardworking volunteers, and generous members and partners. I vow to do my best for the people and pets that Utah Humane serves, and to do the right thing for every animal we help in the years to come.”

Maurice holds a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University and a master’s degree from the University of St. Francis. He has been employed by various nonprofit organizations for over 23 years.

Maurice served as the executive director of Wild Care in San Rafael, California, director of development for the Animal Legal Defense Fund in Cotati, California, and general manager of Dogs for the Deaf in Medford, Oregon. He served as the executive director of the St. Tammany Humane Society in New Orleans, Louisiana and worked in various positions with the American Red Cross both nationally and internationally.

The seventh annual Wags to Wishes gala presented by the George S. & Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation raised over $210,000.

Utah Humane is the largest open-admission animal welfare organization in Utah. Since 1960, it has been sheltering homeless animals and creating an environment of respect, responsibility, and compassion through its programs, education, and legislation.
