• Homeless elderly people

The number of elderly homeless people will likely triple by 2030, according to an expert at the University of Pennsylvania. Dennis Culhane says the situation is dire but, with the appropriate funding, things could improve. “We can either just maintain people who are in poor health and in a state of homelessness, with crowded emergency rooms, hospitals and nursing homes, or we could use the money wisely to actually solve their homelessness problem and reduce the total costs,” he said. • Controlling cancer

A drug originally approved 65 years ago to control blood pressure has the potential to serve as an anti-metastatic drug, according to new findings from a study in an animal model of melanoma. The drug, reserpine, prevented what are known as tumor-derived extracellular vesicles from fusing to healthy cell and sharing their cargo of disease-promoting molecules. Led by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, the study found that moderate doses of reserpine before and after surgery to remove a primary melanoma tumor virtually eliminated lung metastases and significantly prolonged survival. (EDITORS: Additional information)

• Genetically modified food

The more opposed to genetically modified foods people say they are, the more they think they know about the subject and the lower they score on a knowledge test about it. This is according to research from the University of Pennsylvania, in collaboration with the University of Colorado Boulder, Washington University in St. Louis, and the University of Toronto. “It’s always interesting, and not infrequent,” said Paul Rozin of Penn, “that people with particularly strong opinions about a subject are less informed about it than those in the middle of the spectrum.” (EDITORS: Additional information)

Most parents raising a child with ADHD know that the disorder may lead to poor performance in school, failed friendships, and rampant disorganization. However, few parents and clinicians know that ADHD predisposes children and young adults to increased health and medical risks that may shorten their life expectancy. The White House held a roundtable today with the leaders of several conservative groups, including Heritage Action. The meeting focused on border security and how to make good on the promises that have been made to the American people.

During the meeting, I spoke directly about the need to secure the border and that any serious plan must include the following:

  • A border wall
  • Strong enforcement of our immigration laws
  • The closing of loopholes that are being used to skirt the law
  • Common-sense reforms, such replacing the unfair visa lottery with a merit-based system

Overall, it was a healthy and productive meeting. As I walked out of the room, I had a three key takeaways for the next three weeks:

1. Congress needs to step up and act. During the shutdown, Democrats continually said that they’d work to secure the border, but first the government had to reopen. With the government now reopen, Congress has no excuse not to act. They must send a bill to the President to secure the border and strengthen the enforcement of our immigration laws.

2. Conservatives in Congress should not disengage—now, more than ever, is the time to fight for good policy. Conservatives should not sit back and do nothing. We need them to fight and lead as any bill will potentially get worse in Democrat hands. Once the final bill is released, conservatives can decide whether or not to support it.

3. The President absolutely needs our help. Democrat Congressmen are at risk of cow-tailing to the radical-left that clamors for open borders. Republican Congressmen are at risk of ceding ground because of apathy and fatigue. We urgently need to drive Democrats and Republicans alike to secure the border. If we act now, if we mobilize our friends, families, and communities to write letters, sign petitions, make calls, attend rallies, etc., then we have a real chance of achieving a major policy win. You can take action today by calling your member of Congress.

President Trump stands prepared to sign a bill on to secure the border. We need to make sure that any bill that hits his desk is a win for conservatives.

My team and I will keep you updated over the coming weeks with the latest updates on this issue and what else you can do to be engaged.
