Dear KidsOutAndAbout readers:

The end of August marks the beginning of football season. In football, the game is pretty simple. Hardy men run and pass the ball down to the end zone, then kick it through the goal posts. To help get them there, their coaches paint a picture of what winning looks like. It's their job to make the plan, boost their team's confidence, and keep everyone's eyes on the prize. The end of August also marks the beginning of the school season, which makes it a good time to think about the end goal of school.

Here's what I think the end goal of school (and, well, EVERYTHING) should be: a happy, healthy, productive, engaged life. So instead of the narrow goal of getting A's or admission to a fancy-schmancy university, the end goal of my daughters' education is simple: to keep the doors open to whatever they want to do later on. That's it, that's all I care about. Grades don't matter to me. My kids need to learn a LOT, and they need to learn how to work hard, so that later on, they can learn more, and work happily.

My job as a mom is not to carry the ball for Madison and Ella, but to make sure they're prepared out on that field and running in the right direction. This easy End Goal Principle has also given me a handy and cheerful answer for when they've asked why they have to learn something: "Because we're not going to let an 8-year-old (or 11-year-old, or 15-year-old) decide your future for you. Get busy on that math!" (We home school, so I've been asked that question a lot over the years.)

Unlike football, education is not a competition: Every kid can win. In fact, every kid IS winning if today they're even a few steps closer to the goal line than they were yesterday. And helping others win means you win even faster.

So remember: Each kid has his or her own set of personal goal posts. There may be obstacles, but there is no opposing team. It may be a long way down to the end of the field, but those goalposts get closer every day. And you get to be the coach, cheerleader, and biggest fan all in one.
