The Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) has a number of announcements for February:

First, our next Utah Women’s Leadership Speaker & Dialogue Series free event is titled, “Raising Girls to Become Leaders: Competence, Confidence, & Courage.” It will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 (6:30-8:30pm) at UVU (live streaming available too). I will first present some research data on the topic, and then I’ll moderate a panel of women who have raised daughters and worked with young women in this area: Abby Cox (Wife of Lt. Governor Spencer Cox), Michelle Kaufusi (Mayor of Provo), Rebecca Chavez-Houck (Retired Utah State Representative), and Jeanette Bennett (Owner & Editor, Utah Valley Magazine). Second, we will be offering an in-depth training called “Unconscious Bias Workshop: From Awareness to Action” on February 22, 2019 from 7:30 AM – 11:00 AM at Thanksgiving Point, Lehi. It is $75, and you can register online here.

Fourth, here are some of our partners’ upcoming events: 

  • February 8-9 (various times): 3rd Annual Ignite Your Influence Conference, Women’s Influence Center, St. George Chamber, St. George
  • March 7 (6:00—8:00pm): Provo Girls Summit (ages 8-12; Provo Library), introduces girls to women in various professions and allows them time to dialogue (RSVP starting Feb. 7, Eventbrite; find on FB and IG @provogirlssummit)
  • March 19 (11:00am-1:30pm): “Rocking Your LinkedIn Profile with an Updated Bio & Headshot,” Business Women's Forum Luncheon, Salt Lake Chamber, SLC
  • April 22 (8:00am-4:00pm): “Women in the Money: Financial Empowerment Conference,” Utah Financial Empowerment Coalition, Sheraton, SLC (more details coming next month)

Fifth, the 2019 legislative session is underway and YWCA Utah is on the hill advocating for policy change that impacts Utah women, girls, and families. Check out their online policy center for 2019 policy priorities and to sign up for their advocacy emails to stay in the loop on issues that matter to you!

Utah State Senate to Recognize Navajo Code Talkers

 

What:

Senate Minority Assistant Whip Jani Iwamoto is sponsoring SCR 2, Concurrent Resolution Recognizing Navajo Code Talkers, to recognize and honor the Navajo Code Talkers’ legacy for their extraordinary contribution to the nation. The resolution also designates August 14, 2019 as Navajo Code Talkers Day in the state of Utah.

 

“I am very honored to sponsor this concurrent resolution with Senator David Hinkins, our legislature and the Governor,” Sen. Iwamoto said. “Recognizing the Code Talkers’ efforts to help win World War II in the Pacific Theater.” 

 

The Code Talkers created top secret code utilizing the Navajo language to transmit messages, saving thousands of lives. Theirs was the only military code in modern history that was never broken by an enemy.

Sutherland to hold Innovation in Education Symposium

 

SALT LAKE CITY — Sutherland Institute has announced an upcoming event, “Innovation in Education.” It will be held Wednesday morning, Feb. 6, at the Hinckley Institute of Politics.
 
This event is open to media who RSVP to Kelsey Witt at kelsey@sifreedom.org.
 
Leading education innovator Dr. Clark Gilbert will keynote. Gilbert currently acts as president of BYU-Pathway Worldwide. Following President Gilbert, contributing authors of Sutherland’s newest policy guide Innovation in Education and Utah policymakers will discuss a wide array of topics including competency-based education, flexible spending accounts, restorative justice in school discipline, costs of higher education, public/private partnerships, industry pathways, and the future of teaching as a profession. Details for the two panels and their participants can be found below.

ABOUT DR. CLARK GILBERT:
Clark G. Gilbert became the first president of BYU-Pathway Worldwide on May 1, 2017. BYU-Pathway was built to bring education to those who otherwise might not have access to a traditional university. BYU-Pathway serves over 40,000 students in 500 locations around the world.
 
Prior to his new assignment, President Gilbert served as the 16th president of Brigham Young University-Idaho. As president of BYU-Idaho, he focused on increased access, student mentoring, and the growth of the university’s online programs.
President Gilbert previously served as CEO of Deseret News Publishing Company and Deseret Digital Media, where he was recognized as the Innovator of the Year by multiple media associations.
 
Early in his career, President Gilbert taught as a professor of entrepreneurial management at the Harvard Business School. He recently co-authored the book Dual Transformation in Harvard Business School Press, and has also published in MIT, Sloan Management Review, Harvard Business Review and Oxford University Press.
 
President Gilbert graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in international relations. He earned a master’s degree in East Asian studies from Stanford University and a doctorate degree in business bdministration from the Harvard Business School.
 
President Gilbert was born in California and raised in Arizona. After serving as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Japan, he married his wife, Christine. They are the parents of eight children.
