Dear KidsOutAndAbout readers:

You know how you can tell your kids something over and over again about how fantastic they are, and they totally don't trust you? "You HAVE to say that, you're our MOM," is what they tell you. And then someone from outside the family tells your kids the exact same thing, and they suddenly believe it's true? And you want to reply, a little testily, "Haven't I been telling you that all along?" but you keep your mouth closed so as not to disrupt the glow? Well, I think it's sort of the same thing when leading a team of wonderful people like mine here at KidsOutAndAbout.com. I do my best to express my gratitude for all that my team does to make this site valuable. And they smile and nod at me, but I think part of them believes inside that I have to say these things; after all, I'm the mom publisher.

But then, during our 17th birthday celebration last week, you gave them a wonderful present. In last week's publisher's note, I told you a little fun history about where we've come from and where we're going in the near future. And then I asked you to complete a one-word survey to let us know the best word to describe KidsOutAndAbout. And wow, I think suddenly my team actually believes all that I've been telling them for years.

Your answers generated the word cloud above from the most common phrases you used to describe KidsOutAndAbout. Some of you even took the time to write more words than just one, usually encouraging, sometimes with pithy suggestions. Believe me, my team has read every word of the thousands we received, and we are taking both your encouragement and ideas to heart. So many of you love being that parent or grandparent or aunt in the know about all of the hidden secrets of your area. So we'll do our best to give you even more of the comprehensive information you've come to expect from browsing our calendar, our lists, our articles, our KOAA map app, and our weekly newsletter. And I'll do my best to be inspiring in this publisher's note, too, as some of you were nice enough to say. But really, you know, it's YOU who are inspiring US, every single day. Thank you.

Debra Ross
Publisher, KidsOutAndAbout.com

P.S. Congratulations to ELC from Connecticut, who won the $200 Amazon gift card from the survey.

Get a FREE Executive Function Test in MAY with your Educational Therapy Assessment!

Executive Function and self-regulation refer to a set of mental processes that enable us to plan, focus our attention, remember instruction, and juggle multiple tasks. When our Executive Functions are working well, we can filter distractions, prioritize tasks, set and achieve goals, and control our impulses. When those mental processes are under-developed then we are easily overwhelmed, have competing priorities, and get stuck.

We help people develop EF skills through direct instruction and coaching.

In/Out: Artwork by Clayton Middle School Students

In today's world, the range of experience increasingly consists of confrontations with images. All around us, we encounter screens and pictures large and small. Digital technology is allowing for pictures to be turned into endless identical copies, untouchable and flickering in cyberspace. This year, students at Clayton Middle School have taken on the task of bringing images into the tangible world of objects, creating unique and physical works of art. On display you find a selection of pictures that connect our young artists with their life experiences—imagined and real.

Easy Mother's Day Gifts That Kids Can Make or Do Themselves

Kids love to make homemade gifts, and mothers love a homemade gift for Mother's Day. In theory. But in practice, the littlest kids don't have too many skills for crafting yet, and older ones can get frustrated trying to make their artistic vision become reality. And while mothers are overjoyed with the thought and effort put into any gift, they also only have so much space in the house to display it all. Read on for ideas like a decoupage vase, homemade jewelry, flowers for the garden, a lip scrub. . . moms will love these easy, kid-made crafts, and kids will be proud!
