Weber High Wrestling
Coach Jonathan Giatras has been coaching wrestling for 16 years and will be putting that experience to good use this year at Weber High School, especially when 20 percent of his team are first-time wrestlers. But don’t let that throw you off; Coach Giatras has already seen a lot of progress with his young team. “During our first competition this season in Evanston, we had 5 wrestlers make it to the finals to wrestle for 1st or 2nd. Only one of the five had ever wrestled in the championship round of a tournament before.”
Coach Giatras plans on spending a lot of time with his team on learning to prepare mentally for matches. “I spend part of every practice working with our wrestlers on mental toughness,” he says. “It usually takes many months before a wrestler feels comfortable executing moves.” Still, Coach Giatras knows that his team is ready for anything and will support each other. “I want my team to know that they can overcome any challenges that face them in their lives,” he says. “I want them to know they have the strength to accomplish anything they put their minds to. Our goals are to be the best at whatever we do and find a balance in all aspects of our lives.”
