Dear KidsOutAndAbout readers:

I remember the first time Madison lied to me: She was 3 years old. I had offered a trip to the playground, but first she needed to put her toys away. She really, really wanted to go to the playground, and after we got her shoes on, I asked whether she had put the Duplos and blocks back in their bins. She answered, "Yes? Yes. Yes." "Um, Madison, are they still on the floor in the playroom?" I asked. "No? No." she replied. "Let's go see together," I said, holding out my hand. When we got downstairs and Madison saw all the building toys on the floor, she burst into tears. It wasn't embarrassment at having been caught in a lie; it was the shock of realizing that even though she really, really wanted those toys to have been put away so she could go to the playground, they hadn't been.

The "wishing doesn't make it so" truth is one we all confront constantly throughout life. I'm doing it right now.

See, I like summer. Actually, I like late spring best, when the world is bursting with new life and new colors and the promise of even more sun to come. So I've been busily avoiding swapping out the summer clothes in our drawers for the winter clothes up in the attic, even though it's November. I tell myself that it's because I've been so busy, as doing it right takes a couple of hours, but the truth is that looking at sleeveless shirts on my shelves feeds the illusion that we're not really hurtling headlong toward gray days, long nights, and icy pavement. I'd probably be more comfortable right now wearing cozy sweaters and scarves, and yet a part of me believes that dressing for warm weather will make it so.

It's silly, sure, and this weekend I'll face facts, do the chore, and be better off as a result. But understanding that this impulse to deceive ourselves is a very human one makes it easier to empathize when our kids lie, which in turn helps us teach them to recognize it as a mistake that can be fixed. When Madison was horrified that the blocks were still on the floor, I said, pleasantly, "Oh! See, they're still there. Want a hand picking them up, or do you want to do it yourself?"

Actually, I'm kinda hoping Madison says this same thing this weekend when she sees me going up and down the stairs with armfuls of coats and sweatshirts. Maybe wishing will make it so.
