7-7-2019 - GoFundMe: Teacher Raise Funds to Ensure Students Graduate

Tuesday, July 9, 2019 - 6:15pm

Hi there-

I wanted to make sure you had seen the GoFundMe campaign for Roots Carter High School. A teacher, Kallie, has created this campaign to fund the development of a program which would support students that are credit deficient and help them graduate on time.

Funds raised will go towards school supplies, tissues, hand sanitizer, and calculators.

Campaign Description:

Hi, I am Kallie a teacher at Roots Charter High School. Roots is a Title 1 public charter school in the inner city of Salt Lake. A Title 1 school means that more than 40% of our student body is from low-income households. We do our best by keeping fees low and even offer free lunch to all of the students. However, everyone knows that a teachers budget is tight. That is why I am here. This next school year I am moving spaces to finally kick-off a new program at the school for students that are credit deficient . The goal is to help provide more support and a condensed learning atmosphere that allows students that wouldn't have the opportunity to graduate on time to succeed in obtaining their diplomas. Last year we had ten amazing students graduate with their class even though at the beginning of the year they had no hope. My dream is to create a space that is welcoming and a place that students want to be. Many of our students come from homes that will break your heart and I truly believe they deserve somewhere that they are proud of.

I wish I had the funds to create this by myself without asking for help, but just like the budget is tight, so is a teachers salary. With extra money I can buy everything my students will need to help with their journey of success. This includes paper, pencils, calculators, hand sanitizer, tissues, and other basic school supplies. It would also go towards new or at least not falling apart furniture.

I just want to express how much these students deserve this. People always ask me why I choose to teach the "troubled kids" and I always answer "Because other teachers left them behind and they deserve a teacher who will love them and give them a chance". These are not high-risk kids that I want to help, these are kids from high risk environments that they did not create.

I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for all of the support and love!
