Study: 68% of Americans Believe Car Damage From a
Collision Is Covered by Comprehensive Auto Insurance
…BUT THEY’RE WRONG

–‘Insurance Myths and Misconceptions’ Report Released by insuranceQuotes.com–

AUSTIN, TEXAS (June 20, 2019)—Does having a red car really increase your auto premium? Is flood damage covered by a standard home policy? Do women actually pay higher health premiums than men? The answers to these questions are no, no and yes—respectively—but according to insuranceQuotes.com’s newly released Insurance Myths and Misconceptions Report, many millions of Americans incorrectly say otherwise.

“While we do our best to try to educate people on insurance, there are unfortunately still many pervasive myths and misconceptions that millions of American adults believe pertaining to different types of coverage, from auto and health coverage to homeowner’s and life insurance to even electric scooter coverage,” said Jason Hargraves, managing editor, insuranceQuotes.com. “For consumers, insurance misinformation can end up being seriously costly—and potentially dangerous.”

Among the study’s findings:

Electric Scooters
36% incorrectly believe that electric scooter riders are required by federal law to have liability insurance.

“As the popularity of electric scooters has continued to grow across the country, so has the number of their accidents and injuries. But when it comes to their laws and regulations, that is handled on state and local levels,” added Hargraves. “For consumers, whenever they’re obtaining any kind of coverage, we always recommend price shopping, which often results in savings, and paying attention to the details regarding what is and isn’t covered.”

Comprehensive Auto Coverage
68% of Americans incorrectly believe that comprehensive auto coverage covers car damage from a collision.

Having a Red Car
36% incorrectly believe that having a red car increases auto insurance rates.

Health Premiums for Men vs. Women
66% are unaware that women, on average, pay higher health insurance premiums than men.

Flood Damage
35% incorrectly believe that a standard homeowner’s insurance policy covers flood damage.

Mold Damage
34% incorrectly believe that a standard homeowner’s insurance policy covers mold damage.

Life Insurance
46% are unaware that life insurance providers are allowed to factor in someone’s pre-existing medical conditioners when determining their premium.

The full report—which includes additional data, insights and analysis—is available at https://www.insurancequotes.com/auto/insurance-myths-keep-americans-guessing-61919

Methodology:
This study was conducted for insuranceQuotes.com via telephone by SSRS. Interviews were conducted among a sample of 1,009 respondents from April 2 to 7, 2019. The margin of error for total respondents is +/-3.64% at the 95% confidence level. All data are weighted to represent the adult U.S. population.

USU Professor Awarded Nation’s Highest Science and Engineering Award

LOGAN --- The White House last week announced that Utah State University Assistant Professor Idalis Villanueva will receive the highest honor awarded by the U.S. government to scientists and engineers.

The Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, or PECASE, is bestowed upon junior faculty who are leading innovative research and who demonstrate exceptional leadership in science and engineering. Villanueva is the first faculty from Utah State University to receive the award since it began in 1996, and she is the only 2019 award recipient from Utah.

“I am simply humbled and honored to be representing my island of Puerto Rico and my home institution, Utah State University, on this presidential award,” she said.

A first-generation student from Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, Villanueva (pronounced Veeya-nu-AVA) has led a remarkable start to her career in academia. Since joining USU in 2013, she has become one of the most accomplished faculty in the College of Engineering where she’s currently an assistant professor in the Department of Engineering Education. Her colleagues say the prestigious PECASE award demonstrates Villanueva’s ambitious drive and commitment to improving research-informed educational practices.

“This award represents an outstanding series of accomplishments that Idalis has made in just a few years,” said College of Engineering Dean Jagath Kaluarachchi. “She is so deserving of this national recognition, and we are fortunate to count Idalis as part of our faculty.”

Villanueva graduated from the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez with a degree in chemical engineering before earning a master’s and doctorate in chemical and biological engineering from the University of Colorado-Boulder. She later completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health and taught at the University of Maryland before joining USU.

Villanueva is an award-winning faculty researcher. She has authored 61 research manuscripts and book chapters, presented dozens of conference and research presentations and holds one filed patent and one proceeding patent. She currently oversees six ongoing multi-institutional research studies and has secured a total of $2.5 million in research funding. In 2017 she received the Faculty Early Career Development Program award from the National Science Foundation, and earlier this year received the Utah State University Robins Award as Faculty Researcher of the Year.

Villanueva is also an active member of several professional societies including the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, the American Society for Engineering Education and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Villanueva was nominated for the PECASE by the National Science Foundation. She will receive the award at a special ceremony on July 25 in Washington, D.C.

breathe is more than just an album. It's an emotional crutch. It's moral support. It's the friend we all need at our darkest times. It's the sound of a band coming to terms with their own mortality, their own anxieties, their own self-doubts. And it's a reminder that, as long as there are songs sung back as if our lives depend on them, we are never alone.
