The House and Senate are back in session. On Tuesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee began hearings to confirm Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court which started with a bang. Separately, the House and Senate held their first public hearing on the Farm Bill conference and now a total of 9 spending bills are being conferenced respectively.

News from the Hill

• Recent polls show that Democrats have a double-digit lead over Republicans in the midterm elections. To actively fight against the left’s effort, Heritage Action is spending $2.5 million and backing 12 candidates this November to maintain control of the House. We are taking this election seriously, and so should you.
• The Senate Judiciary Committee held confirmation hearings for Judge Kavanaugh this week. Obstructionist Democrats tried to halt the hearing, making it clear that they are opposed to Kavanaugh’s nomination regardless of his credentials and long standing judicial background. More than 60 protestors were arrested during the first day of the hearing and we witnessed stalling tactics unlike ever before.

Looking Forward

• The House and Senate conference over the Farm Bill is well underway with the first public hearing this week. Three reforms Farm Bill conferees should include are the House-passed SNAP work requirements, Sen. Grassley’s “active engagement” requirement for crop insurance and the House passed provision to repeal Obama’s EPA WOTUS rule in the final version of this bill.
• Conferees have been named for the L-HHS appropriations bill. While the House has failed to pass it’s own Labor-HHS bill, conferees shouldn’t lose sight of conservative policy riders contained in the House version which include defunding Planned Parenthood, the Child Welfare Provider Inclusion Act and the Conscious Protection Act.

Sentinels Taking Action

Last Friday, Sentinels Olga Matlin, Brad Smith, Dave Johnson, Brent Backus and Peter Lee, met with Congresswoman Lesko (AZ-08) to discuss tax reform, DHS appropriations and immigration, and overspending. Before leaving, Dave Johnson asked the Congresswoman what else Sentinels can be doing to advance the conservative cause. Lesko responded that sharing stories about how policy impacts them personally is an effective way to get a message across and suggested that Sentinels use videos and letters to the editor.

Action Items

• Support President Trump’s nomination of Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. You can sign Heritage Action’s petition to confirm Kavanaugh and share with their activist communities. 
• Tell your representative to oppose provisions adopted in the Homeland Security (DHS) appropriations bill on amnesty, asylum expansion and exasperating the family separation issue. Instead, we need an appropriations bill that secures the border and enhances internal enforcement. 
• Support Faith-Based Adoption Agencies. Liberals are suing and shutting down religious adoption agencies in the guise of political correctness. In the end, all it is doing is hurting the children who need help the most. We must #KeepKidsFirst  Read more and call your congressman about this important issue.
