UNITED UTAH PARTY PROVIDES SHARP CONTRAST TO GOP CONVENTION
UUP Chair agrees with GOP Chair about Republican “metal fatigue”
WEST VALLEY CITY, UT – After a bitterly divisive State Republican Convention, United Utah Party Chair Richard Davis noted that, at least on one point, he fully agrees with State GOP Chair Rob Anderson.
“Rob said his party is suffering from ‘metal fatigue,’ like an obsolete aircraft that could fall out of the sky at any moment,” Davis said. “I think that’s a perfect metaphor not only for the state of the Utah Republican Party, but the whole broken two-party system.”
Davis noted that the divisions that have divided the GOP for the past four years show no signs of healing, even in the wake of a decisive federal court decision that reaffirmed the compromise measure that allows a dual path for candidates to get on a primary ballot.
“It’s a sad commentary on the state of Republican leadership that Mitt Romney, the most popular politician in the state, is being forced into an expensive closed primary that non-Republican taxpayers will be forced to pay for,” Davis said. “Everyone knows he’s going to win both the primary and the general election, but he’s been rejected by a majority of Republican delegates, which speaks volumes about the kind of extremism in the Utah GOP.”
Davis said that the UUP Convention next week will provide a stark contrast to the contentious Republican gathering.
“At our convention, all party members are delegates,” Davis said. “While the Republican leadership is eager and willing to defy the majority of their own members, we want to be as inclusive and responsive as possible.”
The UUP state convention will be held at 10:00 AM on April 28 at Midvale Middle School in Midvale. Three federal candidates for the UUP will be officially nominated. The new party has 19 candidates running for office throughout the state.
“People don’t want a party with metal fatigue,” Davis said. “More and more of them are finding a new political home in the United Utah Party.”.
