Secretary Perdue Statement on Senate Confirmation of Ken Barbic
(Washington, D.C., April 26, 2018) – U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue today issued the following statement regarding Senate confirmation of Ken Barbic, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Assistant Secretary for Congressional Relations:
“As USDA continues its mission of helping agricultural producers feed, fuel, and clothe the world, effective communication with Congress is a key element. Ken Barbic will bring a combination of an agricultural background and legislative expertise to create a free-flowing dialogue and exchange of information with lawmakers. I commend the Senate for its approval of Ken Barbic, and urge Senators to take up other USDA nominees as quickly as possible.”
Background:
Ken Barbic most recently served as a senior director for the Irvine, CA-based Western Growers Association, where he has worked for nearly a decade to advance the competitiveness of American produce farmers. He grew up in Bakersfield in a farming family, which, from an early age, gave him an appreciation for the challenges and opportunities facing agriculture. Prior to his work with Western Growers, Barbic served as Deputy Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Congressional Affairs and as a legislative assistant with the House Committee on Ways on Means. He graduated with honors from Maranatha Baptist University with a B.S. in business management.

Uplift Youth Climate Conference organizer and San Juan Citizens Alliance Animas Riverkeeper
“Yes, I hope your rivers are running free and clean.
And I hope they’ve carved a canyon that makes you feel small because above all else, humility is needed right now.
We’ve come to learn that our waters have never been boundless,
and in the rivers of the American West we’ve found this great wound.”
With a new piece every month, Voices Rising elevates millennial voices through a digital platform to publish diverse forms of storytelling. From poetry and creative nonfiction to song and visual art, we hear from young people grappling with the greatest challenges society faces.
Happy Earth Day!
Torrey House Press was honored to be included on this year’s Earth Day Access Utah with Tom Williams and Stephen Trimble. Featuring Mishka Banuri, Brooke Larsen, Tim Glenn, and Forrest Cuch, the segment focused on the Voices Rising project, updated monthly, and the Breathing Stories chapbook and blog, updated twice per week.
Utah air quality is a year-round issue. Though we can see the pollution so clearly in winter, oft-forgotten ozone still invisibly tests our lungs in warmer weather. We'd love to hear your Breathing Stories too. You can submit your own air quality essay, story, poem, or artwork here.
