6th Annual Utah Pacific Island Heritage Month Kick Off

 

(SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, May 7, 2018) The 6th Annual Utah Pacific Island Heritage Month Kick is Saturday July 28, 2018 again behind Sorenson Recreation Center at 855 California Ave (1300 S) from 5p-10p which was declared by Governor Herbert starting in 2012, creating educational, fun, Community engagement around culture, the arts, resources, youth, business, health and food, Learning about Pacific Island similarities and differences as our differences are our individual strengths!

Created by Pacific Island Knowledge 2 Action Resources (PIK2AR). Executive Director, Susi Feltch-Malohifo’ou stated “One of the purposes of the Kick Off is to expand ethnic and under-served business and artists customer base and to help all vendors find new markets in adjacent spaces to introduce existing product and or services that increase income into Pacific Island others households”

 

Last year 1500 people attended the Kick Off and it made the list of the best 12 Ethnic Festivals in Utah to engage and learn. 450 Backpacks with School Supplies were given out for visiting all the cultural stations in the Pacific Island Culture xCHANGE Tent.  This year there are 9 stations representing the Utah communities from Fiji, Hawaii, Marshall Islands, Krosae, Pohnpei, New Zealand (Maori), Samoa, Tahiti and Tonga with interactive activities I bet you didn't know that there are that many Pacific Island cultures in Utah and guess what? There are more! Pacific Islanders are about 50,000 strong in Utah.  1 in 4 Tongans in the United States lives in Utah, the largest Tongan Community and the 4th largest Samoan Community and the Micronesians are the fastest growing Utah community.

Cultural Food booths from Chuuk, Fiji, Hawaii, New Zealand (Maori), Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga alongside many other local foods vendors.

Free educational activities and swag for all ages for many different interests. Looking forward to another fun family evening with nonstop stage performances and Arts & Crafts. Thanksgiving Points Children's Curiosity Museum with many free activities for the children.

Vendor Mandy Fowler, Jamberry Consultant stated “We had a great time last year and my half Samoan son fell in love with his ethnicity, he felt surrounded by love, has gotten to know so much of his culture this past year and I couldn’t be happier”
