Educators teach to the test. They have to. Tests are powerful tools that tell people what they believe is important. What happens when vast amounts of what schools test can be answered in seconds on student’s smartphones?
Rising numbers of college graduates are having difficulties finding jobs at the same time as employers complain they cannot find people with skills. In an exclusive new interview with C. M. Rubin, Founder of CMRubinWorld, OECD principal Andreas Schleicher reveals that it’s not uncommon to find “a few academics and government officials who determine what millions of students will learn” and these leaders “will often defend the scope and integrity of their discipline.” Schleicher is currently leading over 70 countries in their efforts to design and implement education policies and practices for a new world. “The reason why it is so hard to move school systems is that there is a much larger invisible part under the waterline. This invisible part is about the interests, beliefs, motivations and fears of the people who are involved in education, parents and teachers included.” He adds, “It will be our imagination, our awareness and our sense of responsibility that will enable us to harness the opportunities of the 21st century to shape the world for the better.”
