#1 Partnerships between business and culture
EDCUtah found in a recent study that businesses cite a vibrant cultural sector as the #1 thing they look for in a community when considering the decision to relocate or build new workspaces. With unemployment at near zero levels in UT, businesses must get creative to attract top talent. Additionally, multiple national studies indicate that business values creativity above all other natural skills in potential employees.
The business and cultural sectors seem a perfect match and yet Utah's nonprofit cultural sector has struggled to attract philanthropic dollars from the private sector since the recession. Both the for-profit and nonprofit cultural sector want more audience and customers.
We at UCA want to encourage our members to get a little more creative about how they approach corporate partnerships and sponsorships. As I talk to business leaders, they communicate that they are less interested in earning exposure of their brands with their donations, but are more interested in learning the impact of their donations on the community. They are also looking for unique experiences that they can offer their employees either as rewards and to boost creativity.
I invite you to check out Americans for the Arts' pARTnership movement for ideas on how the cultural and private sector can better partner in a manner that benefits both. UCA and Utah Division of Arts & Museums partnered together to bring out Jessica Stern from AFTA last week. Click here for ideas to promote better partnerships!

#2 Congratulations to UCA (now sadly, former) Intern Mary Stringham for her internship with the Office of the Curator for the U.S. Treasury! YOU SHOULD HIRE HER!
Mary Stringham is a recent graduate from the University of Utah with an Honors B.A. in Art History along with a minor in Spanish. She has carried a number of internships over her college career as an ArtsForce intern at the University's College of Fine Arts, the Admin and Advocacy Fellow at the Utah Cultural Alliance, and is now interning in Washington D.C. in the Office of the Curator of the U.S. Treasury. Last year, Mary was a research assistant under Dr. Sarah Hollenberg of the University's Art History Department and conducted research on the emerging category of Global Contemporary Art and its relation to the AP Art History Curriculum. In addition to her interest in art history, Mary also holds a passion for theatre and was one of the 2017-2018 awardees of the Promising Playwright Award from the University's Theatre Department. She recently had a staged reading of her newest work, Mapplethorpe at Studio 115. After her summer internship in D.C. Mary hopes to eventually pursue an M.A. in either Art History, Arts Administration or Playwriting and then land a job in the arts and culture sector. UCA wishes Mary well on her next adventure!
#3 ArtsForce Programming Success at the University of Utah
Because UCA has now had four amazing interns from the U's ArtsForce program, I'd like to give it a little shout out. ArtsForce is an award-winning graduation preparedness program created by and for University of Utah College of Fine Arts undergraduate students under the leadership of Associate Dean for Undergraduate Student Affairs, Liz Leckie. ArtsForce was devised to help students transition from college into successful and rewarding careers in any field they choose – in or out of the arts. Since its inception in 2013, ArtsForce has been powered by research from the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP) whose findings illuminate the high demand for creativity in the modern workforce and highlight career successes and challenges of arts alumni.
Through ArtForce, students learn the value of their arts degree, how to articulate the varied applications of the skills they are learning, and be their own strongest advocates. Each year, ArtsForce interns create opportunities to provide their peers skill building workshops, professional mentoring, and networking opportunities with established artists, businesses, and organizations. Last year, ArtForce asked myself and then-intern Mary Stringham to share with us their experiences with the nitty-gritty of networking.
ArtsForce joins Utah Cultural Alliance in a commitment to strengthen cultural awareness, arts & humanities advocacy, and professional development. It is not surprising that previous ArtsForce interns Cynthia Chen, Paul Hill, Mary Stringham, and current intern Kylie Lincoln have furthered their professional careers interning for Utah Cultural Alliance!

#4 Library Square Survey
What does the future of Salt Lake's Library Square look like to you? As the Main Library approaches its 15-year anniversary, they begin planning for the next 15 years. Continued investment and a renewed commitment to immersive programming will ensure that Library Square remains vibrant and relevant for decades to come.
Please take a few moments and fill out this survey to give the city an understanding of how you currently use Library Square (even if you're not a SLC resident) and what you hope to see in the years to come.
