How To Break The Bad Habits
You Don’t Know You Have
If you don’t know you have a bad habit, obviously you have no motivation to break it. But it is the mysterious habits that we do subconsciously – or almost subconsciously – that can do the most damage to our lives.
“Sometimes bad habits can veer into addiction territory,” says John Collopy, author of the book The Reward of Knowing (www.johncollopy.com), “The most dangerous bad habits are the ones we don’t realize we have.”
Collopy is a successful real estate broker today who is the owner of 38 real estate offices in Minnesota and Wisconsin. But it was not an overnight success. He had a long uphill battle against demons he didn’t know he had. He thought he had moved past his troubled childhood with a dysfunctional family and abusive father. But when he became an adult, he quickly became dependent on alcohol to get through the day, and he also had anger management issues.
“Pinpointing bad habits is not as easy as diagnosing a drug or alcohol addiction,” says Collopy. “Honing in on why we think the way we do, and why we do the things we do – that takes some deep reflection that many people won’t take the time to do.”
He says that it was only after he dived deep into his own soul that he realized he had subconscious bad habits and he needed to break the cycle. He says he makes a conscious effort each day to make choices that align with his personal life goals.
He offers these suggestions for those who may be struggling to understand why they continually seem to make the wrong decisions.
“Our habits – good or bad – determine if we reach most of the goals in our lives,” Collopy says. “What I’ve learned is that you have to identify the underlying cause of the bad habits before you can break them.”

"...they're following in the footsteps of other Scottish rock crossovers
with heavy sounds but inviting hooks-aided by singer Ross Leighton's ability
to soar over a busy chorus." - WIRED
August 24th, 2018 - Scotland - Rock band Fatherson have premiered a brand new video for "Charm School," the latest single from the band's forthcoming album Sum Of All You Parts. Fans can watch "Charm School" now exclusively on Billboard: http://bit.ly/2Llk77n. Sum Of All Your Parts, Fatherson's third full-length album, drops on September 14th and is available for pre-order at smarturl.it/SumOfAllYourParts.
"The video for Charm School is part of a series of music videos and a live session that we shot in one location to accompany our new album 'Sum of all Your Parts'. We felt it was important to create a cohesive world that encompassed everything we wanted to say," shares Fatherson. "The video for Charm School bridges the gap between the lyrical content of the song and visually linking this space to the album's artwork, particularly the last shot."
They continue: "When we recorded the album with New York-based producer Claudius Mittendorfer (Weezer, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol) we wanted to make an album that sounded live. We took inspiration from fans telling us how much energy atmosphere there is at our live shows - so tracked the bones of the album live and in track order, all in one studio. This really coloured the album, and is great to be visually represented by the videos also all taking place in one space."
Fatherson have traditionally been a word of mouth band. Attend any of their shows and you will find a room echo with lyrics being sung back en masse by adoring fans. The devotion of their fans saw the last album jump straight in at No. 2 in the Scottish album charts as well as performing strongly in the U.K. Other highlights include packing a 12,000 person tent at T in the Park and playing with Kings of Leon in Vienna.
The band have established themselves as a potent live force, having sold out Glasgow's Barrowlands as well as London's Scala on their previous run of dates. Together with blistering shows and a rabid fanbase Fatherson operate in a distinctly Scottish plane of sentimentally - it is no coincidence they have previously toured with the likes of Frightened Rabbit, Biffy Clyro and Idlewild.
The band recently announced their new album Sum Of All Your Parts with the release of "Making Waves" - a song indicative of what to expect from the next FathersonLP. According to Ross Leighton (guitar/vocals), the song "defined how the album would sound" as well as being a "heart on your sleeve slacker tune with a tonne of groove." The single does mark a change of direction for the band - the rousing and anthemic choruses remain but there is a newfound edge best summed up in the stunning video for "Making Waves."
Marc Strain (bass) goes further when contemplating the shift in band's sound: "As a band we're always going to have "rocky" songs but Rock music can be very formulaic and boring. We didn't want this record to just be a carbon copy of Open Book or I Am An Island. Making Waves was the song that made us rethink our process and start to get really excited about this new album."
