Gov. Herbert, Superintendent Dickson and 2018 Teacher of the Year to address Utah’s teacher shortage
What:
State education leaders will discuss Utah’s teacher shortage and issue a call for more teachers. They will also discuss strategies being implemented to help teachers who desire to return to the classroom.
Over the last decade, the number of new teachers has struggled to keep up with teacher turnover and growth in Utah’s student population. State and education leaders have been working on steps to close this gap. Their efforts are focused on encouraging more students to become teachers, improving retention and re-engaging former teachers.

Gov. Herbert orders flags lowered in remembrance of Sept. 11, 2001
SALT LAKE CITY (Sept. 10, 2018) – Gov. Gary R. Herbert has authorized the lowering of the Flag of the United States of America and the Flag of the State of Utah on Mon., Sept. 11, 2018, in observance of Patriot Day.
Gov. Herbert issued the following statement:
“On September 11, 2001, we lost nearly 3,000 lives to the senseless and cruel forces of terrorism. Seventeen years ago, parents left for work, never to return to their children. Far too many lost spouses, siblings, children, loved ones. That day, terrorists took aim at our nation and at our families. They tried to extinguish the flame of liberty with fear. But that flame did not sputter. Emergency responders and ordinary Americans alike gave their own lives while trying to save others.
“Those brave men and women showed us how selflessness drives away fear. They showed us that we are more together than we are alone. And they showed us that in addition to the core American ideals of liberty, freedom and justice, Americans are also motivated by compassion, selflessness, and persistent hope.
“May we honor their memory and their sacrifice by recommitting ourselves to these ideals and remembering that by standing together, we can bring light to even the darkest times.”
Flags will be flown at half-staff at all state facilities from sunrise to sunset on Tues., Sept. 11, 2018.
