• Hospitalized children
Hospitals aren’t as safe as they could be for pediatric patients, according to findings from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Nursing and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The study, based on data from 1,875 pediatric-care nurses in four states, shows that acute-care settings with better work environments for nurses better protect children from harm. Eileen Lake, author of the study, suspects one reason is because nurses feel more free to speak up about safety and patient care. (EDITORS: Additional information)
• Classroom teachers
America’s schools are hiring more teachers than ever but are struggling to keep them in the classroom. Research by Richard Ingersoll of the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education identifies this and several other changes in the teaching force during the past 30 years that have serious implications. The research also shows that, despite a significant increase in the hiring of minority teachers, it is those teachers who are leaving the fastest, and the diversity of the teacher workforce still doesn’t reflect the student population. (EDITORS: Additional information)
• Cultural crisis
The damage done by Islamic State militants includes destruction of cultural-heritage sites aimed at erasing cultural memory and freedom of expression for minority groups such as Christians, Yazidis, Shia and Kurds. The State Department has selected a team from the University of Pennsylvania to “rewind and repair the damage that was done” in and around Mosul in northern Iraq, according to project manager Michael Danti. “This is the worst cultural heritage crisis since the Second World War. We’re going to be dealing with this for decades.” (EDITORS: Additional information)

JANUARY 9, 2019 - AUSTIN, TX - Driver Friendly has returned. "We always felt bad about disappearing a few years ago," the band says in a joint statement. "To make up for our "ghosting" we want this EP release and show to serve as a "thank you" to our amazing fans. As of right now we're not sure what the future holds for us. While we are happily pursuing other avenues of life, we know that the band will always be an essential part of who we are. But let us be clear: we're not closing any doors to the future and this is not the closing ceremony. Rather we hope this release satisfies and energizes our audience to push us towards that next project - whatever musical form it might take"
The band also has announced an upcoming reunion and release show at Barracuda in Austin, Texas on February 2nd. Tickets for the show are available now at this link: https://bit.ly/2VGjLyu
Driver Friendly has and will always be Tyler Welsh, Andy Lane, Jeremi Mattern, Juan Lopez and Chris Walker. In 2012, they caught the attention of Tom Hanks when they released the music video for "Messidona" which was a tribute to him. They have released three albums - Chase the White Whale, Bury A Dream and Unimagined Bridges- all of which can be streamed now on Spotify or Apple Music.
In their busiest time as a band, they were chosen as one of MTV's '30 Criminally Artists We Couldn't Stop Obsessing Over' and as one of NPR's Austin 100. They have toured with bands such as Motion City Soundtrack, The Wonder Years and Seaway.

Catch Bonneville cisco at Bear Lake’s Cisco Disco
What: Later this month, residents of Garden City will welcome visitors to the Bear Lake Monster Winterfest and Cisco Disco, an annual celebration that promises fun for the whole family. The Cisco Disco — held at dawn on the shores of Bear Lake — corresponds with the Bonneville cisco spawning run. Bonneville cisco are tiny fish, and they can only be found in Bear Lake. When they prepare to spawn, more than eight million gather in the lake’s shallow waters. Then, anyone with a valid Utah fishing license can simply scoop them out of the water with a dipnet. Reporters and photographers are invited to head to Bear Lake and see why the Cisco Disco is an annual tradition for many families. To learn more, visit http://bit.ly/CiscoDisco_2019 or call the DWR contact listed below.
When: Saturday, Jan. 26 at dawn
Where: Garden City, Utah (on the shores of Bear Lake)
Contacts: Scott Tolentino, 435-881-0202
Accompany officers on winter range patrols
What: During the winter, many of Utah’s big game animals — including deer and elk — move from higher elevations to lower ones, where it’s easier to find food. Unfortunately, the animals can be much more visible and susceptible to poachers when they’re on these lower-elevation winter ranges. To protect the animals, our conservation officers spend many hours conducting patrols on winter ranges that are vulnerable to poaching. The patrols often start in the early evening and run through the early morning hours. Officers sweep known areas of concern to apprehend and discourage poachers.
