Utah Inland Port Authority Board Selects Envision Utah to Implement Public Outreach Initiative

SALT LAKE CITY (Jan. 24, 2019) - The Utah Inland Port Authority Board (UIP) has selected Envision Utah as a contractor to lead a public outreach initiate to help facilitate the development of the northwest quadrant of Salt Lake City.

“Envision Utah has the knowledge, relationships and national expertise to serve the board through this complex process. We received a number of responses from skilled public engagement firms, and we have found the right fit,” said Derek Miller, chair of the Utah Inland Port Authority Board. “Engaging key stakeholders and the public is critical to ensure we correctly develop the northwest quadrant in Salt Lake City. Careful collaboration and planning will secure the future success of the Inland Port and the state of Utah.”

The Authority participated in an official state procurement process for the consulting partner, which included an evaluation committee to assess responses from local and national firms. The evaluation committee reviewed three initial responses to the request for proposal that met the set criteria. Following the evaluation, the board reviewed written proposals and participated in an in-depth discussion. Scoring took into account each firm’s expertise, depth of understanding and quality of proposals for the project. At the conclusion of the vetting process, the evaluation committee selected Envision Utah as its official recommendation to the UIP Authority Board, which the board accepted.

“It is important that everyone who has a stake in the future of the Utah Inland Port area has a meaningful voice in this process,” said Robert Grow, executive director of Envision Utah. “We look forward to assisting the Inland Port Authority Board in engaging with people and figure out the future of the northwest quadrant of Salt Lake City.”

The first phase of a three-phase process will begin immediately, and will focus on public input. This may include researching similar projects in other locations, identifying best practices and examining all relevant demographic, employment, real estate and infrastructure data. Second and third phases will include collaborative planning and detailing financial options and resources of the development.

The Utah Inland Port Board Authority was created in 2018 by H.B. 2001 to ensure the Northwest Quadrant of Salt Lake City enhances the future economic development of businesses and citizens while improving solutions to air quality, environmental traffic and minimizing the negative impacts of growth. The Board Authority is comprised of local and state officials from both the legislative and executive branches. The authority is tasked to facilitate the development of the area known as the “Utah Inland Port” including infrastructure planning and financial tools for the benefit of the state of Utah.

Bishop Votes Twice to Pay Federal Workers

“Federal workers ought not shoulder the burden of Washington politics.”

WASHINGTON – On January 23rd, The House of Representatives voted on a measure that would immediately issue paychecks to all federal employees. Rep. Bishop (R-UT) voted FOR the Motion to Recommit H.J. Res. 648. On January 24th, Bishop voted FOR another measure which called for the immediate delivery of paychecks to all employees of the Department of Homeland Security.* These measures each failed to pass the House. Bishop has released the following statement:

These GOP measures represent a passionate way of addressing the plight of the furloughed and unpaid government employee. Federal workers ought not shoulder the burden of Washington politics. These measures should have passed. Paychecks should be going out.

“I want the government open and I want to provide for border security. This is not an either/or question. We can have both. We should have both.

“Before the shutdown, a majority of members in both the House and Senate were supportive of measures to fully fund the government and secure the border. It is thanks to the misguided threat of a filibuster by a minority of senators that we are in today’s situation. To end the present shutdown, we need the support of Speaker Pelosi. To prevent them in the future, we must abolish the filibuster rule.”

*The Department of Homeland Security includes the Transportation Security Administration, Customs and Border Protection, Citizenship and Immigrations Services, Immigration Customs Enforcement, Secret Service, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the U. S. Coast Guard among others.

Defying conventional education modes, founders of Green School put the notion of sustainability as the centerpiece of their educational philosophy. Wall-less classrooms allow students to connect with nature directly while environment-friendly infrastructures enable students to discover the significance of sustainability on a daily basis. According to Chickering, the educational goal of Green School is to teach students to become “system thinkers” who aim to steer the world, “be they environmental, economical, societal or personal”, to a sustainable path -- a key element to solving current global issues. In order to achieve this goal, educators from Green School focus on helping students understand the importance of reflecting on mistakes, asking the right questions rather than giving the right answers, and additionally offer students choices in their learning journey.

To make the “system thinkers” idea practical, teachers in Green School also educate students to become “world-ready”. According to Chickering, a teacher is “a mentor, a guide, a coach, and most importantly, a co-learner” who creates a structure in which students are able to explore their interests freely and “stretch themselves as a learner”.
