A Quick note from Mayor Leonard Call
February is bringing a change to the Pleasant View City Council. Councilman Chugg had a wonderful opportunity to purchase a home and property adjacent to his family’s farm in a neighboring city. David told me it was a very difficult decision to move out of Pleasant View for a multitude of reasons. Both he and his wife felt like this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to obtain this home and property and that although the timing wasn’t the most ideal, they felt like it was the right thing for them. I appreciate the contribution that David made to the Council–a great man with a great business sense. He has the ability to get his point across while maintaining an open mind to others’ ideas. That is a quality that makes a good leader. Thanks for all you’ve done in our City, not just your contribution to the Council, but also in your business dealings and your family’s contributions to the community. Good luck to you and your family.
As I write this article, applications are being taken for the Council to pick his replacement. We plan to conduct the interviews and make that appointment on February 12th. The successful candidate will serve until the election this fall. This means that this fall will bring an election that will include four council positions instead of three. One will be for a two-year position (the remainder of Councilman Chugg’s term) and three will be for the normal four-year positions that are up this year.
As always, I am committed to doing whatever it takes to ensure that Pleasant View remains the best place to not only grow up, but the best place to grow old.
Mayor Leonard Call
Weber Highs Sterling Scholars for 2018-19 year have been selected for their achievements in a specific subject and will continue on to state for scholarships
Each year at Weber High, a chunk of seniors are selected as Sterling Scholars for exceptional achievement in a specific subject. After compiling a portfolio of their work, the students are interviewed and judged based on proficiency and performance. According to their website, “The Sterling Scholar Awards Program seeks to commend and encourage excellence among all nominees.”
This group is recognized at Weber High, but will then compete at a semi-final and final level as well. Colleges within the state of Utah give out scholarships or stipends for regional winners; for example, the University of Utah awards a renewable $5,000 annual scholarship to all regional category winners for a total value of $20,000 for a maximum of eight semesters. Similarly, BYU gives out a one-year full tuition scholarship to all regional category winners.
First round interviews are on Feb. 19th at Lomond View and final interviews will be Feb. 28th. A final state announcement will be held on March 15th. Good luck to all our scholars!
