Salt Lake City, UT, March 15-16, 2019  700 athletes and unified partners, 200 coaches, and 400 volunteers, family members and fans will converge on the University of Utah this Friday and Saturday, March 15-16, 2019 for the Special Olympics Utah State Basketball Tournament.

In its second season as a standalone sport and competition, the Special Olympics Utah State Basketball Tournament has seen participation grow, with athletes of all abilities and ages. This is due in large part to the three-year partnership developed with Larry H. Miller Charities and the Utah Jazz that gives Special Olympics Utah the ability to create new opportunities for athletes to not only try basketball as a sport, but to hone skills and improve their game both on and off the court.

“Basketball is a sport athletes of all ages and abilities can learn, play and enjoy their whole lives,” expressed D’Arcy Dixon Pignanelli, President and CEO of Special Olympics Utah. “Athletes always need opportunities to try a new sport, and this partnership opens more avenues to do this.”

As the exclusive title sponsors of the Special Olympics Utah State Basketball Tournament, Larry H Miller Charities and the Utah Jazz also lend their support to the growth of statewide levels of play from the Motor Activities Training Program (MATP) & Skills, Unified Developmental 3v3, 3v3 Traditional, 5v5 Traditional and Unified for athletes ages 8 and up.

Basketball is one of the top sports at Special Olympics Utah, with the highest level of participation for a single sport. Players take it up at all ages and at all abilities, from young players learning to handle the ball and keep it under control while dribbling to older, more experienced players who have the moves and know the strategies to play challenging ball.

Dixon Pignanelli added, “Special Olympics Utah works hard to empower our athletes to reach their full potential. Our athlete development model promotes motor and skill development, health and fitness, and prepares athletes for competition at all levels. Having the support of Larry H Miller Charities and the Utah Jazz gives us the ability to open more doors to give new and existing players opportunities to improve skills and continue to grow as athletes and individuals.”

About Special Olympics Utah

What is the mission of Special Olympics? To provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts and skills with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Why are sports the focus of Special Olympics?  Sports are transformative. Participation in sports shifts the focus to what a Special Olympics athlete can do. Through sports training and competition, individuals with intellectual disabilities develop motor and communication skills, discover new strengths and abilities, and experience the joy and satisfaction of meeting a goal, all of which leads to greater confidence. As athletes engage and participate with others they become part of our community. By developing greater confidence and interactive skills, many athletes go on to hold jobs or volunteer positions. Witnessing these successes encourages others to consider the potential of those with intellectual disabilities.

Special Olympics Utah is a chapter of Special Olympics International and a registered 501(C)(3) non-profit Utah corporation, operated by Utahns for Utah’s citizens with intellectual disabilities. Learn more at www.sout.org or call 801-363-1111 or email information@sout.org

The upcoming tour will feature the Blackpool 5-Piece performing tracks from their latest release Welcome To The Neighbourhood. In addition to hypnotizing live crowds, these tracks have seen great success at streaming with adds to Spotify's Rock Hard, Totally Alt, Rock Save the Queen and Rock Your Body Playlists and on radio with adds to Sirius XM Octane, Music Choice and Active Rock stations like WRXQ-FM, WRKZ-FM, KHTQ-FM and more.

Released last Fall via Pure Noise Records, the band's second full-length album has garnered impressive praise from outlets like Alternative Press, Kerrang!, Upset Magazine, Substream Magazine and more. Rocksound went so far as to place the album in their #3 spot of the "Top 50 Albums of the Year", sharing that "No band levelled up to the extent that Boston Manor did this year. In not so much building on their debut 'Be Nothing' as burning half of it down and moulding it into something entirely new, their follow-up was heavy, murky, filled with genuinely innovative songwriting and marked them out as one of the best young rock bands in Britain."

Despite the new sounds that infiltrate this record - which was recorded by Mike Sapone (Taking Back Sunday, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Envy On The Coast) - Boston Manor are just as ferocious and immediate as ever. They may be embracing new elements in their sound but listen to the savage hooks of "Flower In Your Dustbin" or the vicious vitriol of "Hate You" and there's no doubt who has made this record.

Sen. Lee Statement on Yemen Resolution Passage

WASHINGTON – Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) issued the following statement Thursday, after the Senate passed a resolution pursuant to the War Powers Act calling for the removal of United States Armed Forces from hostilities in the Republic of Yemen.

“The Founders placed the power to declare war squarely in the legislative branch so that it would reside in the body most accountable to the people. With passage of this resolution, we have reasserted Congress’s constitutional role over declaring war and over putting American blood and treasure on the line. It is long past time that we end U.S. involvement in this unauthorized, unjustified, and immoral war that has caused immense human suffering. Yesterday’s vote was a step in the right direction, and I look forward to the House of Representatives taking up and passing this resolution.”

Senator Lee’s remarks on the Senate floor can be found here.
