Innovative program gives medical professionals the resources to specifically identify treatments and target the illnesses of each patient
It’s an unexpected honor and a thrill to receive this lofty recognition.”
— Lincoln Nadauld, MD, chief of precision health for Intermountain Healthcare
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, USA, March 14, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Intermountain Healthcare’s Precision Genomics program is the winner of the 32nd annual Governor’s Science Medal for Industry.
The award, which is the highest honor bestowed by the state of Utah to residents and companies who have made significant contributions in scientific and technological fields, was announced Wednesday by Gov. Gary Herbert, leaders of the Utah Science Technology and Research (USTAR) initiative and the Governor’s Office for Economic Development (GOED).
Precision Genomics at Intermountain Healthcare is an innovative program that analyzes individual differences in genetics, environments, and lifestyles and gives medical professionals the resources to specifically identify treatments and target the illnesses of each patient.
The Intermountain Precision Genomics program conducts DNA testing that typically matches late-stage cancer patients with medications that can lengthen their lives improve their quality of life, and reduce side-effects in their treatment, all at about the same cost of traditional cancer therapies.
“Precision medicine has opened doors that have allowed us to make a real impact on numerous people in the communities we serve,” said Lincoln Nadauld, MD, chief of precision health for Intermountain Healthcare. “The best part is that we’re just scratching the surface. There’s much more to come that will help patients, our friends, our neighbors, and our families to live the healthiest lives possible.”
Intermountain Precision Genomics initially focused on providing targeted therapy options for late-stage cancers. The possibility for research and treatment in other fields of medicine are just beginning, including opioid dependence, cardiovascular health, and medication metabolism.
Intermountain’s Precision Genomics expertise is enhanced by the fact that Intermountain Healthcare has the nation’s largest biorepository, started in 1975, which stores more than three million tissue samples used to advance cancer treatment and other research.
Since 1987, the Governor’s Science Medal for Industry has been awarded to individuals and organizations who’ve made significant contributions that have enhanced scientific and technological knowledge, education, and industry. An advisory panel reviews all nominations and selects the winners.
“It’s an unexpected honor and a thrill to receive this lofty recognition,” said Dr. Nadauld. “We’ve long admired previous recipients of this award and we’re humbled to receive it.”
Precision Genomics will officially receive the award on April 1 during Governor Herbert’s Utah Technology and Innovation Summit.
Intermountain Healthcare is a Utah-based not-for-profit system of 23 hospitals, 170 clinics, a Medical Group with some 2,300 employed physicians and advanced care practitioners, a health insurance company called SelectHealth, and other health services. Intermountain is widely recognized as a leader in transforming healthcare through evidence-based best practices, high quality, and sustainable costs. Peter Blake Leadership Award
Aeryon Flight Training
Peter Blake of Aeryon Defense USA recognized with a Professional Education and Training Leadership Award for Technology Assisted Training Programs
Peter is a true professional. We have enjoyed working together on his vision for modern technology assisted training that reinforces learning and safe operations through practice and simulation.”
— Steve Klingler, CEO of Education Services LLC
SALT LAKE CITY, UT, USA, March 13, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Education Services LLC is proud to recognize Peter Blake of Aeryon Defense USA with a 2018 Professional Education and Training Leadership Award for Technology Assisted Training Programs.
Peter is being recognized for his vision and leadership in creation of the R60 SkyRanger and R80D SkyRaider pilot training programs. Over the past two years, Peter has overseen continuous evolution of this training from a fully in-person instructor-led experience to one that strategically leverages online technology to maximize efficacy, accessibility, and quality.
Participants now complete much of their training online through a series of highly interactive “pre-learning” modules that consist of multi-media instruction, interactive learning and practice activities, guided practice pseudo-simulators, and use of the full Aeryon Mission Control Software simulator right from within their web browser. Instructors can monitor engagement of and easily communicate with each trainee and training group and are able to take the entire training program offline for use in the field where Internet connectivity is not available. For trainees, the experience is intuitive and personalized, including branding specific to the service branch or department the trainee is affiliated with. Micro-learning modules and a gamified user interface make it easy for participants to maintain situational awareness, with progress indicators clearly identifying the modules they have completed and those that remain outstanding. The training also serves as an on-demand review, available to past trainees who wish to brush up on the system or practice in the pseudo-simulators or full MCS simulator.
The online training system also includes support for instructors by housing training guides and classroom presentation materials, helping to ensure that all trainees benefit from a consistently high-quality experience whether they are trained directly by Aeryon Defense USA personnel, partners, or military trainers.
Congratulations to Peter Blake and Aeryon Defense USA on this exceptional achievement!

THE DARLING FIRE
Premiere Debut Single
"For The Loveless"
Streaming now on Billboard
New Album
Dark Celebration
Out June 14th via Spartan Records
South Florida - March 18, 2019 - Indie rock band The Darling Fire is thrilled to share their debut single, "For The Loveless," streaming exclusively on Billboard. The song comes from the band's forthcoming album, Dark Celebration, out June 14th, 2019 via Spartan Records. Pre-orders for Dark Celebration are available now at spr.tn/darkcelebration and include an instant grat download of "For The Loveless."
On the new single, the band shared: "There's a certain segment of the Japanese population that isolate themselves from the world by choice, for months or even years at a time. They do this partly due to fear, sometimes due to mental illness and often because they simply prefer to be removed from society. "For the Loveless" was written for these confined adolescents and adults, the Hikikomori, but also speaks to anyone who feels particularly unique or isolated."
They continued: "We had an awesome experience recording this song for our forthcoming album with J. Robbins at Magpie Cage Studio in January of this year. J. Robbins also mixed the album and Dan Coutant of Sun Room Audio mastered shortly afterward. We couldn't have asked for a better result and we're happy to finally be able to share a piece of what we've been working on for the past year!
Beginning sample courtesy of Eric Fensler."
Spartan Records proudly welcomed The Darling Fire to its esteemed and growing roster last year - a veritable mosaic of indie notoriety featuring Jolie Lindholm (The Rocking Horse Winner, Dashboard Confessional) on vocals/guitar, Jeronimo Gomez on guitar (The Rocking Horse Winner, As Friends Rust), Steven Kleisath on drums (Further Seems Forever, Shai Hulud), Gregg Moore on bass (Slap of Reality) and Matthew Short on guitar.
After years of individual success in some of the scene's most beloved bands, The Darling Fire was born of both deep struggle and deeper friendships. "Jeronimo and I had a particularly difficult end of the year in 2017," says Lindholm. "We'd been wanting to write music together for awhile, but life kept getting in the way. The tough time we were having made us realize that life is short and there was no better time. We didn't specifically set out to start a band, per se. It just began to materialize as things started changing, once we started to share what we were working on. It almost took on a life of its own and kept pushing us to move forward, to make this into a real thing."
Looking at the The Darling Fire's impressive roster, the band's debut release, Dark Celebration, is in many ways what you'd anticipate - energetic, powerful, melodic, and heavy; however, it is far more nuanced than you would imagine. The collective sum of the parts and the alluring heart-on-sleeve lyrics produce a more intimate, spacey and bewitching experience - an authenticity that speaks to the true cathartic nature of the project. "The album is really a celebration of dark themes and experiences that have occurred in our lives both personally and distantly," says Short.
Selecting the right producer to bring the Dark Celebration vision to life was of paramount importance. In all the band's discussions, there was one name that seemed appropriate for a project of this magnitude - J. Robbins. Aside from the list of impressive production credits (The Dismemberment Plan, The Promise Ring, Against Me!), Robbins was also a formative member of some of The Darling Fire's favorite bands (Jawbox, Burning Airlines, Government Issue). The result of this collaboration was a powerful coalescence of artistry and vision - the record that five artists spent their entire careers waiting to make. "This band feels like a family," says Lindholm, "We're all facing the challenges of what is to come together, with eyes wide open. Regardless of where we are in our lives, there is always the opportunity to start anew - to find fresh inspiration and kinship."
Without evoking too many cliches, while the darkness can be disorienting, there is a beauty in its temporariness. It requires a great amount of courage to confront the unknown in its purest form, but rarely is regret the outcome of this process.

WASHINGTON, March 18, 2019 – Acting Assistant to the Secretary for Rural Development Joel Baxley today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing $91 million to build or improve community facilities (PDF, 108 KB) and essential services for nearly 300,000 rural residents in 12 states.
“Modern community facilities are key drivers of economic development,” Baxley said. “Under the leadership of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, USDA is committed to being a strong partner to rural communities in building and maintaining these institutions that are foundational to quality of life and prosperity.”
USDA is funding 16 projects through the Community Facilities Direct Loan Program. The funding helps rural small towns, cities and communities make infrastructure improvements and provide essential facilities such as public schools, libraries, courthouses, public safety facilities, hospitals, colleges and day care centers. For example:
The projects announced today are located in Alabama, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.
More than 100 types of projects are eligible for Community Facilities funding. Eligible applicants include municipalities, public bodies, nonprofit organizations and federally recognized Native American tribes. Applicants and projects must be in rural areas with a population of 20,000 or less.
In April 2017, President Donald J. Trump established the Interagency Task Force on Agriculture and Rural Prosperity to identify legislative, regulatory and policy changes that could promote agriculture and prosperity in rural communities. In January 2018, Secretary Perdue presented the Task Force’s findings to President Trump. These findings included 31 recommendations to align the federal government with state, local and tribal governments to take advantage of opportunities that exist in rural America. Increasing investments in rural infrastructure is a key recommendation of the task force.
To view the report in its entirety, please view the Report to the President of the United States from the Task Force on Agriculture and Rural Prosperity (PDF, 5.4 MB). In addition, to view the categories of the recommendations, please view the Rural Prosperity infographic (PDF, 190 KB).
USDA Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities and create jobs in rural areas.
